nView eats up RAM and processor speed as well

KDE defaults your virtual desktops to 4. This has nothing to do with your virtual consoles at all. I have only 3 virtual consoles enabled on my Linux box, and I have used up to 8 virtual desktops at once in KDE. If you go into KDE's control panel you can configure how many virtual desktops you want, if you DO want the virtual desktops. Right now I brought it down to two virtual desktops, because it only takes up one column of my KBar space. One desktop is for normal programs, and the other is for my debugger.
