This comes from before KDE or X. UNIX and Linux machines have various virtual consoles. Which are basically different console screens, each can have a different login. In my laptop I have four and I think that's the standard.
Multi desktops are a good way of organising different program windows and as ZerOrDie said, why not? It makes life much easier.

    Multi-desktop in Windows?

Talking about multiple desktops. I'm thinking whether there's any good tools for Windows?

nView, a utility from nVidia for their graphics cards, lets you have multiple desktops on Windows.

nView eats up RAM and processor speed as well

KDE defaults your virtual desktops to 4. This has nothing to do with your virtual consoles at all. I have only 3 virtual consoles enabled on my Linux box, and I have used up to 8 virtual desktops at once in KDE. If you go into KDE's control panel you can configure how many virtual desktops you want, if you DO want the virtual desktops. Right now I brought it down to two virtual desktops, because it only takes up one column of my KBar space. One desktop is for normal programs, and the other is for my debugger.

Check out some of the WinXP Powertoys. There's something called the VDM (or MVD or something?) that does it.

The one on Powertoys is called MSVDM (I think it stand for Microsoft Virtual Desktop Manager).

I don't like this tool. It can't be configured to the number of desktop that I want. It can have only 4. I can't have more or less than 4. And it takes up a many space in my taskbar...

You can change the number of desktops on MSVDM.... To a max of 8 I believe, or as little as 2. I don't have it installed right now, but I did about a year ago and it most definately had the option to change the number of desktop's then.

I don't like MSVDM much though, about the only thing it's usefull for is changing your background picture quickly To many of the windows are shared from desktop-to-desktop.

I only use the multiple desktops for debugging junk. It is pretty useful. But multiple desktops are no match for multiple monitors! I'm saving up to buy a little 14" just for debugging stuff while I'm programming, and maybe to do some experiments (I am thinking of one day making a two-player game that plays on one machine, but each player has their own monitor)

Yeah, multiple monitors is defiantely nice. I had 2x 17" for about 8 months or so. Then my video card died (PNY GeForce 4 Ti4200) and I sent it in to RMA.

The video card I got back is messed up on the DVI output (no blue) but it's an upgraded card, and I don't want to send this one back out of fear I'll get my old crappy version of the Ti4200. I'm just learning to live with a single monitor
