what job.... well, I was/am a subcontractor through a rather large company. We do warranty work on nearly every brand of computers, with the exception of Dell and Gateway.

It was doing very, very well. I was working 5 days a week, sometimes there was even too much work forcing us to work Saturday's. It was a very good job. Easy, fun, and paid pretty well, roughly $15/hr though it was a flat per house rate, so some days I could make upwards of $40/hour, some only about $8/hour. My cost of living is ~ $800/month, and I was making a bit more than double that during the good times.

The company we contract out to lost a very large portion of our main contractors, Best Buy. Went from working a little over 200 computers a month, to less than 30...

I'm going in for an interview at Burger King tommorow, and Walmart on Friday.... dear lord this sucks.

I work at home. I'm what you could call tech support / odd-job technician. I basically help my clueless co-workers with simple tasks such as showing them how to adjust resolution or screen savers. When business is going slow here at home, I am assigned to the lawn mower, or weed trimming. A lot of the time I serve as a dog watcher for my boss.

I am a software engineer working on Earth stations for satellite control. I liked my company until quite recently. The development of our new generation stations is just about over and they are shortly to begin deploying them arouns the world. Members of the development team were asked to go on site to assist with integration - this was not in our contracts. We were told, you will go, or you can leave. I'm going.

The IT sector is in a big depression right now, so I have no idea when/if I will find something else. Career change maybe.

Are trade unions banned in Denmark or isn't there a good one for software engineers? Throw some bald, fat, loud militants at them

I just read an article in a newspaper wich told that within 5 years there might be more work in the IT sector then there are ppl to fill in this kind of job.
    (notice the <<might>> above)
Not that i totally trust experts but it means something...

I want to study to get a ICT thingy (dunnno the exact word), but my mom is always saying dont study anything in that kind of sector because they are pqving the streets with IT people.

More and more people are going into the IT field, because they see other people getting paid a lot for it. I don't plan on going into IT. My dream job would be to be a programmer at a gaming company, like Bethesda, or Blizzard. I don't want to get into console development too much, although a lot of companies are making games that are cross-platform.

If I can't work at a gaming company, I'd like to work somewhere like nVIDIA.

how about the really nerd jobs, like embeded work? it sounds like theres a zillion visual basic/html guys and lot of a c++-ers what about assembly?

any skills useful? what has worked for you?

with the 5 years part, why wouldnt we need more? the year maybe off alittle but eventually we have to get rid of cobol and make some new assembly programs. im not sure, but what about the basics in some ics(i forgot what its really called, i dont mean microprocesors) or opcodes?

    thanks for the replies

I can do basic x86 ASM. The most I've done is a bootloader and a little kernel.
