I am upgrading my syatem.
The new specs are
AMD Athelon XP 2600+
512 MB DDR Ram
Asus A7N266-VM motherboard (nVidia nForce220D chipset)
the motherboard has a built in Geforce2 chipset for graphics and a Dolby 5.1 sow blah blah audio chipset....
I wanted to know wheater it is better than my Riva TNT 2 M64 graphics card i have now and what do you think about the specs...
With a set of specs like that you really shouldn't be using on board graphics. I don't know exactly which is better but I know they're both relativly c**p compared to modern stuff. You wouldn't have much success with games with that graphics set I strongly suggest you upgrade. If your not planning on playing any games then I wouldn't have thought you would have needed such a high spec computer to begin with. Only games and real number crunching programs will ever use that much processor to its full extent.

but i thought that the geForce 2 chipset was good enough for average gaming.. though geforce 4 is good my pocket does not allow me to buy an additional card now.. But what do you guys think about the inbuilt geforce 2... (I had Riva TNT 2 and played some good games)...
Personally I'd drop the processor to a 2500+ barton (they're really cheap nowadays) or even less ( a 2000+/2200+) and use that extra money to buy a different card. You can get some good deals cheap with things like the 128Mb ATI Radeon 9000 for £60 that'll be better. You asked what I thought about the inbuilt chip and I think its poo.Old and slow

The GeForce 2 is definately better than your TNT2, but like others said, you might want to drop down the CPU alittle and buy a better video card to go in there.

well got the price difference.. the money i save by stepping down to 2000+ can afford only a Geforce2 Mx which is what i have built on the board.... Now more confusion..

I hate to sound mean about this, but quite frankly the GeForce 2 is holding back video game developers from making more intense graphics.
GF2 (MX) is pretty much the mainstream video card right now, even though it's pretty much 3 year old technology. Nearly anything and everything on the market today is going to be better. But yeah, if price is limiting, choices are few

Yes, you are right though, it will play a good amount of the games today. My fiance's brother has a Duron 900 and GeForce 2 MX and it can still play a surprising amount of games. Maybe not at very high quality, but enough.
Here's a few ideas for you. Newegg is USA (and Canada?) only, so this probably won't be an option, but it's still a good place to get an idea on prices. I'll order these on my personal opinion of price/performance/future proofness.
ATI Radeon 9500 ~$150 (DX9)
GeForce 4 Ti4200 ~$130 (DX8)
GeForce FX 5600 ~$155 (DX9)
newegg quit working here for some reason.... my best guess on prices:
Radeon 9200 ~$110 (DX8?)
GeForce 3 Ti200 ~$90 (DX8)
GeForce 4 Mx440 ~$60 (DX7)
Those are all pretty good substitutes for your card. Quite frankly though, the GF4 Ti4200 is (IMO) the best performance/price. But it's 'only' DirectX 8 so Radeon 9500 wins best overall 'value' card IMO.
The GeForce 4 MX will perform better, however, it has the severe limitation of being essentially a beefed up GeForce 2 MX. That means that while it is cheap, it's still only DirectX 7 and only slightly better than your GeForce 2. Still, it's a relatively popular card, but I would highly reccomend getting at least a DirectX 8 card.
