RAM how do i know?

    hi everyone,

    I need to upgrade ram for my computer. Its a Compaq (yeah I know, what the hell was I thinking), pentium 4 (1.6 ghz), and 128MB ram.

    So when i go to ask about ram prices everyone asks the same thing: "what kind of RAM do you have" I know that there is DDR, RD, and SD. (I dont know of anymore).

    so how do find out what kind of ram I have? I know that i have two 64mb sticks of RAM in my computer and they are by NEC But I dont know what type they are.

    is there a way to find out? A lot of people have told me that there it should be DDR becasue thats what pentium 4 chips come with now a days but since I got my computer september 2001 I may have RD.

    When all else fails, read the instructions.
    If you're posting code, use code tags:
/* insert code here */
>> Its a Compaq

    you should be able to look up your computers model # on the compaq site and find a more detailed description of its hardware components.

    You should be able to look it up in your mobo manual. Which chipset you're on? Some P4 chipsets support DDR and/or SDR. And some other, RD.

    Physically, SD < DDR < RD, i.e in size, or so I think...

    I have RD in mine, and I don't know if this is true for all RD RAM, or if it is only true for RD RAM, but the chips are encased in metal - you can't see the green circuit board. If you can't find out from any of the stuff posted above, try looking at the chips closely and at the motherboard right around the chips to see if it is labeled.
    Away.

    That might just be a heatsink. I got some RAM recently that came with heatsinks as well.
