    Internet connection reliability.

When I call up some web pages, they pop up straight away. Some, generally the more complex sites require me to call them up 2-3 times - they just seem to stall. Today, I'm listening to Test Match Special on the BBC's web cast of the England-Zimbabwe test. The connection is dropping about every 3-4 minutes, and I have to close RealPlayer and start it up again.

Is that typical or have I a problem here?

I would say that it is a-typical and that you have a problem. Are you on dialup and/or are you trying to do stuff during the peak time a lot?
    Away.

My ISP does that sometimes to me as well, but never to the point where I must re-resolve and re-connect to the server. I am on an ADSL connection and generally when I start a download it is lets say 120KB/s and then it gradually lowers to about 80KB/s; I have also seen this happen with most FTP sites. This gives me an idea actually, perhaps it has nothing to do with the ISP, but more-so to do with the way the application handles the buffers for the NIC.

i think all computer parts and programs are made to slow down over time, forcing you to upgrade. 20 years from now DSL will be the same but dl rates will be like 2 kbps just so no one will buy them. i bet if you buy a new computer, turn it on once, turn it off then let it sit for like 3 years without use, it will go much slower. its all a conspiracy, and im willing to bet that didnt help you too much, and i usually dont have problems, im on ADSL

I'm on a 56k modem and whenever I start to download it says I'm going 6 Kilobytes/sec and then it drops down to 2 Kilobytes/sec after about 15 seconds.

ive noticed that on many downloads, the speeds gradually reduce, but on some it doesnt. maybe it has something to do with the server. like downloading something from a microsoft website (100mb+ file) i hardly lose download speed, but most others i do

It's important that you don't lose speed when downloading from Microsoft 'cos when you'll have to start downloading Windows from them every time you want to use it they won't need to upgrade their servers

I'm on a DSL connection, 256 down 128 up. Peak time for whom? I notice this all the time, i.e. basically from 7:00 Am - 23:00 PM in Denmark.

I'm listening again, to TMS, and again, I am having to restart the audio feed at intervals as short as 20 seconds, as long as 10 minutes, averaging about 3 minutes. Very irritating. Sometimes it pops up a "lost connection" box, other times it stops and says buffering, but never comes back.

I have a feeling, (and it is just a feeling), that the problems started when I installed my router. The router seems to be running okay in that I can share the DSL between the machines here, but the feeling remains.

The router could be a problem I'm not sure though. Until recently I had an SMC router, in fact this was my second SMC router, the first fried during a rain storm. I'm on a cable connection and every so often, for no reason at all, boom disconnected. After the disconnect it would immediately reconnect. I noticed this because I spend alot of time on IRC and I would disconnect and then connect right afterwards. At first I thought it was my cable company, so I called them up often and $$$$$ed them out cause I couldn't see what was causing this. Anyways just two days ago my router simply stopped working, for no reason at all. So I bought a d-link router and now the disconnects are gone completely. The cause of the disconnects for me was the router, but in your case I really don't know. On the bright side my new router allows port ranges and was 20$ cheaper.

Oh about the dropping every 3-4 minutes, before my router stopped working, in fact the day before, my connection was going down every 5 minutes for like an hour until I pulled the plug. Later that night I plugged it back in and it worked, but around 3am that night it just stopped working. Dunno if that helps, but the problem sounds similiar in a way, not sure if it's the same problem though. Would suck to go buy a new router and have it be something else. Goodluck.

Edit- Yet another possiblity, a few years ago I believe it was 1998 when I first got a computer, I had random disconnects all the time. I couldn't figure out what was going on, at the time I only had a single computer and no router. I must have tryed at least 6 different ISP's at least. I kept calling tech support and trying to change settings etc, nobody had any idea what it was. Well one day I decided it was time to clean all the dust behind my desk so I slid it away from the wall, and guess what, the dog had chewed on the phoneline I was using and when it was moved even slightly it would cause a disconnect. It's funny now but it really sucked for those 6 months or so and I really feel sorry for all those tech support guys I kept harassing hehe.

    More information...

I have now got two machines running TMS. Both are connected to the same router. In 30 minutes, one has 7 failures, the other has 0!

Failing machine is 2.533GHz P4 running XP, on board SiS NIC.
Working machine 233MHz P2 running 95 with SMC NIC.

To duplicate the earlier session, I was using the P2 to surf, so the system was busy, and the P4 was, apart from Realplayer and Seti@Home, idle.

Additionally, twice recently, I have been out of the country for a week or so, on both occasions, the P4 was left running. On the first occasion, about 24 hours after I'd left, the system had crashed and reloaded. The second time, the system was still running, but Seti@Home had hung trying to download a work unit.

I have tried running the "repair" option for the network connection which promptly reports the system is fine... weird huh?

A name I would never trust.

Try searching the internet for problems involving the SiS onboard graphics chipset and you'll know why. Get yourself another SMC or 3com NIC and then formulate a plan to "remove" the offending chip. May I suggest a blowtorch?

the system had crashed and reloaded
Just a shot in the dark, recently I had a problem with my bios reading my cpu temp incorrectly and this caused the the system to crash and reload often. The problem was fixed with me updating my bios, miraculously my cpu temp dropped 15 degrees. Maybe check the temp on the machine with the p4.

About the disconnecting though that is weird, especially since it's only one machine and not the other hmm.

End of TMS for the day. P4 dropped the connection 23 times, P2 0.

    >>> SiS onboard graphics chipset

Found a source with a problem on SiS 900 LAN, but symptoms were totally different and were fixed by updating the driver. I checked out my driver against the latest available for the MoBo and it is current.

    >>> this caused the the system to crash and reload often.

If I am here working with the system, (system is on 24x7), then it does not crash, it works fine. I can see by the Seti@Home activity if there has been a problem, normally there is not. It is when I am away and the machine is quiet that the crashes/net hangs happen, you'd expect the opposite.

I still have the feeling that these problems started when I started the local LAN, but since the other systems this side of the router are happy and apparently reliable, it would suggest that the problem is with the erring machine rather than the router/LAN.
