    Linux printer/sound problem

Sorry to bother you guys with another one of my (hopefully) easy to solve Linux problems again so soon, but I can't figure it out. I'm running Redhat Linux 8.0 with the most recent updates, and I have both the sound and printer drivers installed. Linux has correctly detected and identified both my printer and my soundcard, however, neither works. I get no sound, including from the test sound button in the configuration, and nothing will print for me

My soundcard is identified like this in the hardware browser:
    Manufacturer: Creative Labs
    Driver: emu10k1
    Device: n/a
    SB Live!

My printer is identified like this:
    Manufacterer: unknown
    Driver: unknown
    Device: /dev/lp0
    Hewlett-Packard DeskJet 940C

If anyone has any ideas, they would be much appreciated...I don't have any idea what I'm doing. If I haven't posted enough information and there is something else that I can tell you that will help, let me know and I'll try to post that as well. Thanks
    Away.

What sound card, are you sure thats the right driver? For my sound card it says I should use that same driver yet it is another one. I at least got errors though heh.

I had the same problem you're having with RH 8. I was looking how to fix it, and I almost did, but it was a pain. I didn't want to pay for OSS and I couldn't find a moderm Free/OSS, so I said screw it. Know what I did to fix the problem? I upgraded to RH 9.

Did everything work properly with RH9? Also, is there any way for me to update to 9 without downloading the entire set of CDs (again)? Other than, of course, getting the CDs some other way. I don't have limited amounts of bandwidth, but I do have limited amounts of patience.
    Away.
