Computer Problems

My computer has been acting VERY strange lately. It has Windows XP Pro (YES, I realise this may be responsible in some way). Almost everytime I open Internet Explorer, it will freeze in the middle of opening my homepage and I'll have to terminate the process via the task manager. I have to do this repeatedly until it works. Also, when I double click the volume icon in the task bar to open sndvol32.exe to adjust the sound, nothing will happen. I check the Task Manager and the sndvol32.exe process is there, but not doing anything. I have to click the volume icon until it does come up. Lots of other programs will do this. They'll appear to do nothing but their process will be there eating up system resources. The PC also reboots about 1-2 times a day for no reason. Any of these problems related?
I think it may be after effects of all the power outs we've been having.

The computer rebooting isnt random. It is a xp feature that clicks on when something is wrong. Have a look in system---advanced---startup/recovery and u'll see a check box for auto restart.


It sounds like an XP stability issue, something is off or corupted, time to reinstall.

That's the catch. My Dad's deployed to Guam right now. He was the one who *ahem*obtained*ahem* this copy of Windows and I have no idea how to get around WinXp's gay copy protection.

If u have the CD you can REPAIR the installation -- just put it in and Boot from CD and go through the process... it will eventually ask you if you want to repair this installation.

Repairing simply just re-copies the files from CD to comp so it's a fresh...

I will warn you that Repairing has never worked for me. But it is still worth the try(it doesn' t take long). Oh, and just incase if you ever run into a boot record problem, a repair install wont replace the boot record .

Oh, and BTW, you could possibly have a bad Power Supply if it is restarting at random times.

explorer crashes are usually hand in hand with xp's system reboot feature, so i ruled out the possibility of a PSU, but it can be taken as a maybe.

Just format your drive and do a clean install.

You could try a registry recovery using the system restore feature.

Personally, I had to follow this procedure a number of times, thanks to corrupt registry information.

Good news. My Dad got back WAY early from deployment, and he's already fixed it. %|
