    CD burner fried?

I have a problem with my CD drive (burner). Whenever I put a cd into it, I hear a lugging sound. Then, when I try to access the CD, my computer claims that the device is not ready. The drivers are in order and have even been reinstalled. The device in communicating well with my computer, so I think it may be hardware related. Any ideas? I first began experiencing the problem during a comp crash where the burner light went on on the CD drive when there was no cd inside.

i get that every couple months, just by a cheesy cleaning kit. the kind with the special cd you put some liquid on. the noise is probally the disc sliding back in forth in the drive, some of their measurements are really craptacular. but mine still works and i get that alot.

Sounds like a problem. Anyway, the best thing you can do is buy all new drive!

If you can't afford one steel one from school your public library or any computer parts retailer!

the best thing to do is not to buy a new one. Grab a regular cd cleaning kit for 5 bucks at a radioshack of kmart or something.

Are you sure you have not been sticking your tampons in the wrong place?

Spend $5 bucks and possibly fix it...or waste your money on a new drive that you might have had to not spend if the cleaning kit fixes whatever is wrong with the other drive? I think I'll try the 5 buck solution first.

Liger86 your a $$$$ing idiot. Noise can be caused by a dust particle grouping in a gear, a loose screw connecting the drive to the case, any number of things. I have yet too see you make a single post anywhere that would lead me to believe you have some form of life living between your ears.

You try and fit a tampon in my CD burner, then get back to me.

Buying new is never your best option, with the exception of the presence of flames and/or large amounts of sparks on the hardware. Most problems with hardware, *espacially* CD/DVD/FDD drives can be solved with some good dust-removal and tightning of screws. I have had CD's explode inside CD-Drives and all i had to do was open em up and shake em long enough to let all the piece's of the CD fall out.

On a more personal note, CodeMonkey, i did a little experiment and putting a Tampon inside of a CD-burner did not prove to be to much trouble. Removing it and ensuring that eveything worked was a bit harder (think water/lubricants with the side effect of oxidation)

If the CD drive's speed is >40-50x, and there is a crack on the inside rim of the CD, the high forces produced by the fast spinning combined with weakened structural integrity from the crack will shatter the CD possibly.

The first time it happened was when i was installing the sims again, with all of those expansion cd's. I just went through one cd after another and they had been laying around for quite some time so they probably were damaged. It was fun though =] it was one of the best PC hardware problems i ever had to fix... way better then when i burned a chip on my motherboard after i incorrectly inserted some ram... I had to get my motherboard replaced. The flames that came from the chip were quite a show though it is just one of those sights you never forget
