    Oracle 9i

is this a good choice for globally distributed database ? (medium sized company)

Um, where can I find SPECIFIC information about Oracle 9i ? Stuff like : costs, special features & tools, hardware requirement etc.

I tried oracle.com and all they gave me was a bunch of general
    information !.

Oracle is a very good choice but it's expensive...

That's why they don't give u any info about cost - they want u to call a sales rep and hash out a price and other junk.

There's also MSSQL - microsoft SQL SERVER - I think is a little cheaper than Oracle and still good...

Or there's MySQL which is free and still very good for medium sized companies.

hmm.. when I said medium sized I meant , about 1500 staff per site and there are about 6 sites globally.

Sooo do you think that free MySQL is sufficient? The client didnt specify a maximum budget so I'll just chuck them whatever seems to be the best out there

Anyway, would be really good if i can actually find a site that talks about costs and all that, for an Oracle 9i.

    MySQL could handle that much...

Oracle I'd say about $5,000 is minimum price and I think that figure is too low, most likely it's more money than that. The sales rep will try to pitch to u some packages based on your needz but it's definitly in the thousandz...

Oh yess, $20,000.00 is a standard amount they expect a small company to pay and in the 50K and 100K for medium enterprises and for large corps it's in the millions.

omg who d hell would pay for that much !

what about MySQL ? you said it's free but I found this on the link you gave.

    https://order.mysql.com/

1 MySQL Pro License, $440 ? What does that mean?

    >>omg who d hell would pay for that much !

They treat the same as purchasing a new car - you get what u pay for - in their eyes 100K is small beans b/c they are considering that the company has an IT dept. with several million dollar budget.

Any medium sized company should not have a problem paying $440 for a commercial mysql license - I would do it since it supportz the software and allows u to receive help for the product. Otherwise, it's free to use - it says only if u are distributing the mysql software with your software and your software is not open source then u should get the License - but getting the license is still a good idea...
