    Randomly Restarting Computer

Ok i have just build myself a new computer with the following specs:

    Pentium 4 - 2.66 Ghz FSB 533
Soltek SL-85DRV2 w/ built in Snd (Not used)
    512 DDR Ram PC-3200
    ATI Radeon 9700 PRO
    Sound Blaster Audigy
    D-ling Lan Card 10/100
    60 Gb Seagate V
    52/24/52 LG Burner
    16/48 LG DVD-Rom

    300 Watt Power Suply..

i have it running Win XP but it keeps rebooting at random times.. i know it is not overheating, the CPU temp does not seem to wanna go over 45 C. Anybody have any clue what it can be? the ram is good, i replaced that and the problem still persists. IF you have any ideas plz leavce em here i rlly need this machine up and runnin

Anything mentioned in the event log?
When all else fails, read the instructions.

Yep. Right click my computer, select properties. Click the Advanced tab, and go to "Startup and Recovery" settings. Uncheck "Automatically Restart" And change "small memory dump" to "(none)".

    Fixed.

    THnx.... but....

first of all i would like to thank you for your reply's. I have checked the event logs but there is nothing in there that could possibly have any relation to this, seems to be completely hardware related. And yes, unchecking the restart opton did prove to help me with the restarts.... now it only freeze's

Further more have done some more testing and it seems that the restarts happen when i transfer information to my HD in large quantities, installations, file transfer etc. I hvae tried both through network and from a cd and both give the same result.

Further more i have repplaced the power box with a 400 Watt and i have tried using a different IDE cable for the HD, both without succesfully removing the problem. Therefor i must conclude that this is either a problem with my HD, it's buffer overrunning or something alike, or a problem with my Mother Board, bus or something alike. If you have any ideas on how i could find the exact problem (i can;t replace the HD nor the MB at the moment) or possibly have a solution to this problem please leave a reply.

I've helped many people with this same problem, adjust your setting to look like my screenshot and it'll (99.9% chance) be fixed.

    that won't fix his problem.
    it just ignores it.
And second he already stated what i just said, the problem still persists. The reason the restart on error (or whatever it's called) option is there is so that while the system is messed up, it can't do anymore damage than it already has if it restarts....if he's having problems and he ignores it like that theres a good chance he could loose data off the drive.

Exactly... THe computer has been restarting do much ever since i build i had to format and reinstall windows on a daily bases because it was gettin so damaged.... I rlly think it is some kind of HW problem it's just that i don;t know exactly where to look. My first guess would be that either the HD can;t take a large amount of data or that the IDE bus is gettin to stuffed.....

Disabling the restart often fixes the problem because it is too sensitive. The number one problem on XP machines is the over-sensitive restart failsafe. I am merely supplying information that is commonly used to fix a bug. If it still persists having done it my way, we know its bigger.

I had a similar problem. My computer just restarted out of nowhere.

Update your drivers for your ethernet(LAN) card drivers and see if it fixes your problem. That was mine.

    Good Luck

sounds like it's a bigger problem as you put it.
That's the only reason i posted my thoughts, i wasn't trying to be a dick...i just figured better safe than sorry until you find the real bug.

could have worn out the drive

Well up to some level both of you are right. Even though i changed the settings in Win XP it still freezes, in Win 98 SE it just runs rlly slow but does not freeze =].

Anyways, i have established that this is a problem i can't logically figure out. It seems like the bus is somehow slowed down and/or blocked in some way.....

I tried using another HD and that did not solve the problem so i think it is save to presume it is something on the motherboard, incompatability or damage in some way....

I e-mailed soltek about it and i am currently awaiting a reply. Thnx for your help evryone If you think you might be able to locate the problem or think you migth have a clue as to what it is or how to solve it plz post here, thnx.

You're not alone... my XP box gives me plenty of BSOD's; and I thought this was supposed to be a super stable OS

Yeah, the major problem is however i built this system for someone else and he quits badly wants it =] and right now it won't even install simple stuff like Office XP and Half-Life and it crashes every time you copy files.... Not rlly a system i feel confident enough to deliver.... I tried the Soltek Support but all they seem to be e-mailing me is links to microsoft knowledge base article's.....

How come my WinXP and Win2k have almost NEVER crashed? In about 3 years of using one or the other, its only crashed 4 times.

    Oh well
