You would notice. Notebook RAM is a different size and would not fit properly in your Desktop.

Yes, never buy any RAM that says SODIMM if you are purchasing it for a desktop (Although it should be quite obvious that a 144 pin stick of ram which is only about 1 inch long, does/will not belong in a desktop).Originally posted by Grade

for newbies, here is some help on msconfig,
http://netsquirrel.com/msconfig/
Did that solve the problem, I'd assume it did.
This may be a little late, but I'd like to chime in anyway. If your computer boots into safe-mode it's not a hardware problem, and most certainly not a RAM problem. One of the biggest differences between safe mode and normal mode has to do with drivers. Simply put, safe mode doesn't load up all the drivers and fun junk that make your computer so cool. If it gets into safemode, it's something wrong with the software
Travis, you are right. My problem is still unsolved. Yesterday, I was goofing around till late night but reached nowhere.
what I did yesterday was a diagnostic start-up i.e. the step-by-step method for start-up. The machine hangs when I say 'Y' for msmouse.vxd .. Is something wrong with this driver ? Do I need to replace it ? If yes, where can I get one ?
Thanks
yes, sounds like you have mouse driver problems. It would help if you told us what type of mouse you have.
Microsoft?
Logitech?
Nope it is not a logitech mouse ... Rather, it is labelled with HP. The entire unit came together when I got it.
Thanks for that link, Ober. I think I will find the driver in a recovery cd that they had given me. But the problem is that in safe mode the cd ROM is not detected ! ... How do I get it to detect the cd ROM in safe mode ?
You may have to copy the driver to a floppy using another machine... ?!
Uh-oh... You can't pull drivers from HP restore CD's... or if you can, I certainly don't know how. BUT you can run the CD's without a format, assuming this is a Windows 9X machine at least.
Give a non-format restore a try. You won't lose anything, and it shouldn't hurt anything, but if that doesn't work you may have to format restore :\
[edit]
I just took a look back at your model. It's not XP right? As far as I can remember most XP systems are 3 digit models, not 4. I think the 8XXX series is even 98, isn't it?
Anyway, give a non-format restore a try.

yeah, it's a win98 ...
I was trying this out
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=302956
But could not go past step 7. whenever i type 'Ext' it says 'this program must be run under WIN32' !!!
I need msmouse.vxd for windows 98 SE. Just can't find it anywhere. Can anybody pls post it ?
thanks
I tried the one on driverguide.com. When i boot it, it says that the driver is an old version of the windows DDK !
do you have the windows 98 startup disk and cd?
if you do, pop them both in and reboot
when it boots do the start computer with cdrom support
then cd tools, cd sysrec, then type pcrestor. That program will reinstall all windows drivers and crap. You'll loose your personal windows settings, but it's like a reinstall without formatting the drive. Good luck.
