    Question Restore CD's

What is up with these "Restore CD's" put in with new computers?
Is it possible to to a full install of windoze with them?

If not, why the hell do they put those in instead of the friggen REAL windoz CD's?

On the other hand, not feeling any part of my body for 30 minutes was scary, especialy for my manhood.

Usually DELL, eMachines, etc., preinstall certain software for profit. An example would be them installing AOL on the computer and then putting links everywhere and AOL will give them some money. This, plus the fact that restore cds are easier for new users to work are the reasons that restore cds exist.

the main reason they did it that way was to reduce the number of copies that were being made.

And I think you will find they are a lot cheaper as well...

    THAT is the main reason

As technology advances, windows doesn't always have the best support for new hardware...or perhaps they plan on you installing another OS in the future. It was a big problem in 9x as a lot of new technology came out that windows was clueless on (the xp features include better internet updating of windows to resolve this problem).
The main purpose of many of the restore cds is to have a backup of important hardware drivers specific to that computer (or line of computers). At least that's how it's been in my experiences.

so, you cant reinstall windoze on another computer that u build to replace another, if that computer only came with a restore cd?

Why? I mean, you pay for the OS, dont you?

Or is it that, you pay for it to be installed, not for the "actual full OS"?

    Im sooo confused.

I think you'll find that it's a Microsoft licesing thing. When you buy a new computer (or major comp. parts), you are entitled to a new OS at retailer prices. I.E., if you buy a new mobo/CPU/RAM/HDD from a retail store at the same time you are entitled to Win XP at reduced prices.

Now, as we all know, under licensing agreements you are allowed to install that OS on one computer, and one computer only. That's part of the deal with manufactured PC's as well. When you buy that computer, you are not buying an OS seperate, you are buying it for that computer as part of the licensing agreement.

Yes, it's all bullcrap, but we can largely thank MS for it. Especially with current restore CD's not even requiring a product key, or activation, the only way to help stop piracy is to ensure that the CD only works on the PC it was intended for.

    *please note*
That does not mean it's impossible to trick the CD, but why the fack would you want to? The software that's on those CD's is intended for the PC it was built around. Putting it on another PC will often result in driver errors, and other annoyances.
    *end noting*

Restore cds are gives out with PCs instead of the Windows + other other software included cant be copied and or used on other computers. Even if you copy the restore cds you cant use them on a computer without their system restore software
