    Strange hard disk

Ive got an hard disk of 6.2 gig or omething like that.
In my bios it also detects a Hard disk of 6.2 gigabyte.
The problem is that when i check how big the disk is in dos or windows then its only 500 Mb.
So i ran fdisk and its kinda strange.
it also says that there is 6.2 Gig on the hard disk.....but then again it says that 472 Mb is in use. I tried to expand this 472 Mb to the 6.2 gig but nothing worked..... at least not with the fdisk program.

So if anyone knows how i could have my full harddrive accesed plz tell me.

check the bios... some have an option for "support large disks" or some equivalent.

euhm as i alrdy said my bios detects the 6.2 gig drive
    ::edit::
and about the large disk support
normally fdisk would ask you if you would like to have large disk support but it didnt asked me so....
+ i did the autodetect hard disk so many times and it always finds a 6.2 gig drive so that isnt the prob.

Hmm, FAT16 had a 500MB harddrive limit if i'm notmistaken,
Try formatting it and assign a different filesystem to the drive.

Hm, Like why? Well, A solution would be then, To split the
harddrive in pieces of 500MB by way of partitioning.

Don't judge so quick about that. You can compare FAT32 with
NTFS that way as well. And there are definitly changes between
    those two (don't ask).

thx all of ya i just figured out that i can split my 6 gig hard drive into OMG can believe im saying this...into 12 pieces of 500 Mb...
    (thx for the thought travis)
and i think ill do that with a boot and root disk from linux (cfdisk has the ways to select types like FAT16 and FAT16 hidden)

There may be differences, but FAT32 has everything 16 has.

check this to see the advantages and disadvantages of FAT16 anyway if ill have clusters of 32 Kb i can reach partitions up to 2 gig with FAt16 (not too bad at all)

does ne1 has a great and brilliant idea because if i make partitions (FAT16) theres none of them that fdisk can see.

So what have i dont now created a partition with fdisk (500 Mb) But afterwards i partitioned the rest of the Hard drive with cfdisk (linux boot-root disk). And then fdisk sees one partition BUT not the other 3 partitions wich are also FAT16. I just dont get it, why did they invented fdisk because it lacks at all kind of things. For me fdisk is like "..........-bins".

save yourself a lot of trouble.go to the site that makes the hard drive ( western digital) or whatever, and download there free hard drive installer. it will make the older computers get past all that.and do tell us what kind of hard drive it is .
