Me and a bud are both on dialups, both have ws_ftp_le and both have eachother ips. we both have our firewalls set up to allow ftp (or so the checkbox says ). We can ping eachother just fine. How the heck do we send eachother files? Thanks.

jesus christ...is this a joke? one of you has to be running an FTP server..
I can have mine set up for that, it's just that crap wasn't working...I'm thinking im going to tell him to forget it and find another way to send it directly (he insisted on going the ftp route cause he wanted to learn how to use the POS).
By the way....you sound like someone who used to come around here

one of you has to have an FTP server running... like TC said.. then you both can FTP to that account or setup different accounts (the one who is running the server will obviously have access to whatever you send him)...
I don't know of any good servers for windows, but there are several for Linux... you could easily setup a Linux-box with an FTP server running and do it that way.

servu 3.0, www.download.com
warftpd is another. The name might be slightly different.
thanks for the responses everyone, i convinced my friend to go about doing it a different way (he uploaded to ftp space he had at his college, i downloaded). I'll let this thread die off now so people in the future can use it, but i won't be needing help anymore, thanks.

U have to run an FTP server - Apache or IIS can be setup for this - then u have to setup your firewall to pass FTP connections to your server...
How do u do that, make sure your server comp IP is outta range of any DHCP setup, like DHCP settings are set for 50 - 100 and your server is at xxx.xxx.xxx.20
www.dslwebserver.com has all the answers and an easy step-by-step tutorial for u to follow.

The IIS ftp is insecure and prone to buggyness and problems. Your better off with a isolated ftp specific server like serv-u or one of the others.
You and your friend should hook a VPN between the two of your computers. It would be better than messin with FTP and would also give you experience with VPN's.
