Question Help building a local network... Problems with the printers

I am helping my friend setting a network in his new office,

He has 12 computers, with 4 Network printers.

    1. One computer : server Win2000 server.
    2. two computers: stations has WinXP on them.
    3. the rest are stations with windows 98.
    4. 2 printers Hp 4050N.
    5. 2 Printers Brother 2010 N

    No internet, Local network.

What is the best IP address to be optain in this network.
    I have choose :
    IP: 192.168.0.X
    Netmask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: ??? I am not using DHCP.

How could I put the IP address for these printers.
How could I control the printers: I am trying to use the jet admin, but I think they should have an IP address first....

    What should we do.?

    Thanx for your help.

You need a Printer server or some kinda of printer connector - otherwise you need to physically hook up the printers to computers and share.

I would use xxx.xxx.xxx.100 - 199 for comps 200+ for printers. I would use 255 as the Server address.

Thanx for your replay ... but if the printer has a network card why doen't need a a LPT com.?

This will not solve our problem.

    Yes.

Our printers are sophisticated and allow for us to set the IP address in the Menu of the printer, but most printers do not have an electronic control panel on them so you need a way to setup the IP addresses.

You do this via a print server, or DHCP would take care of this for you automatically so all you would have to do is plug in the printer to your network - w/o an IP address assigned to your printer it wont work.

    Thanx a lot

I am done with my network, but for public use , I am ganna to write down everything I did so Far.

    Hardware:

    1. 15 PCs each with network card 10/100
    2. 3 HuBs
    3. 3 Printers ( 2 HP L J 4050N , and One Brother HL 2460N)
    4. network Cabels.

    Systems:
    1. Main Computer: PC , with Win2000 Server.
    2. Two computers has Win XP. ( Mangment , and Assistant)
    3. the rest of the computers has Windows 98SE.

After hooking up everything as any small home network, you need to define the TCP IP for the computers and the printers.
for more information :about the TCP/IP installation, and how to set up your local network .

Here is where my problem was :
The network ( Class A) TCP/IP Protocol should be as this:
    IP 10.0.0.X ( 1<x<255)
    Netmask 255.0.0.0
    gateWay 10.0.0.1

The printers given the IP addresss 10.0.0.10
    10.0.0.11
    10.0.0.12

    The computers were numbered:
    1. Server 10.0.0.20
    2. Mangment 10.0.0.21
    3. Assistant 10.0.0.22
    4. The rest of the stations start from 10.0.0.30 and up.

i wouldn't use the 10 ip-set, its a common misconception that its faster, but i find this to be un-true.

I would work fine if you just made one of the pc's the print server and used the 192 ip-set. Also you want you main ip options set to obtain, and then specify under alternative as this will fix alot of problems with networks dumping and such.

    The last steps ...

    Setting the printers:

After I gave up using the jet admin, I found a good way to install the network printers without using the Jet admin, or the printer -server, because of the different systems that I am using.

It is by deffineing the printer as a local printer as follow:
    1. add printer from the printers folder in the Control Panel.
    2. choose local printer and install the drivers for the network printer.
    3. after you install the printer, right click on the printer and choose properties , and choose add port to the printer.
    4. in Add prot, write down the IP address that you gave to the printer and then you will find your printer was connected directly to the computer.

and that how it goes ...

If you have any better suggestion, about the network Class, or any other thing, Please write it down.

    Thanx again .

    Thanx for your replay ,

Did you mean that I should use the IP to be (i.e. 192.168.10.0)
if So , what is the Subnetmask that I should use with it, and what is the gate way too. Please write us more about it. I am just trying and learning.

The GATEWAY is the IP of the ROUTER or comp acting as the router or the IP of the comp sharing the internet connection.

DHCP is the best way to go, tell this guy to drop $150 on a Linksys router and then you won't have to LOCALLY connect the printers to comps.
