Ok, i seriously needed high speed internet, and i can't get cable or dsl where im at so i have to go with satellite. The problem is euipment and install is like 500 bucks, which i don't have. If I guy my own satellite and hook it up can i just pay for the service? Does anyone know if this is hard to do/allowed by companies? Share your satellite internet experience and let me know who you went with and if it was any cheaper than 500 bucks.

Ok, i was a (under the table) DirectTV installer for almost a year, and have installed DSL/TV for them more than a few times.
Installing isn't rocket science but its not rlly all that easy either. You need:
a) The dish
b) the reciever
c) an activated card for the reciever (u can have it activeated by them)
d) a LNB for the dish. For two rooms you can use a DUAL LNB, for more then that you generally need another dish(s), and a reciever for each room.
e) a clynometer(sp). This will help you find exactly what skew/angel the satalite in space is at, which is where you need to aim the dish. You have to know the coords before hand, which you would have to get from DTV(may be hard, i'll see if i still have them for the USA states).
f) Signal box. This plugs into the dish and emitts beeps based on the strength of the signal, your going to need it for the best connection.
g) The modem from DTV.
h) around 100-200 feet of CAT TV cable.
i) Cable ends, as well as the stripper.
First you need to find the location of the sat with the tool mentioned in step "e". Should a object be in the way, you have to relocate your position or its position, it will block the signal or slow you down.
Once you have that mount your dish's base, and adjust skep/angle to match the cly's readings, but don't tighten the nuts all the way down.
Now that you have the angles set and dish mounted, slide the LNB into the front of the dish and tighten it down. You don't want the LNB on till after the dish has been mounted as it can get broke if dropped.
Strip both ends of two(four if its DUAL LNB) 10 foot sections of CAT TV cable and put ends on them. Screw one end of each onto the ends found on the LNB.
Run the other ends of the two(or four) cables into the signal tester and switch it to on. The dials will indicate strength as well as the beeps. Slowly move the sat around on its skew until u find the strongest signal point, and tighten all the skew nuts down.
Run the cables into a splitter if you need, and run them into the house. (obviously you need longer calbes on the LNB, the 10 footers were soley for testing.).
Run them into the reciever first, then split off to the modem. Thats the install, the rest is up to you and DTV to setup. PM me for any extra help, and as far as cost, i will look around i may still have a DTV dish/reciever (MAYBE).

Luckily i've got a best buy and circuit city not too far away so I should be able to get my hands on the equipment, and my friend has a tool for terminating the cat-5 cables so i won't have to buy that one.
I feel that i'll definetly be doing this soon now.
