Hi

I have registered a domain name recently. While, i was browsing thru the web hosting services, i have an option between a LINUX SERVER or MICROSOFT SERVER.

Before spending big bucks, i need advices on the pros and cons of hosting a website on both the linux and microsoft server.

When you think of LINUX think $FREE$$$

When you think of WINDOWS think $$$

- Windows is good but not great, developing a site for a windows server is EASIER but only after you've bought M$FrontPage, MSOFFICE, and some other software namely to develop ASP pages and admin and create MSSQL databases.

- Linux is cheaper, better suited towards being a webserver, is usually setup with PHP, MySQL, and some other really useful and FREE stuff that make it excellent to author sites for.

Windows server is really meant to be an "inhouse" thing where you are at the desk Administrating it - it has absolutely no advantage to the website maker who is publishing his/her web on it. LINUX allows you better control remotely, such as creation of users/groups/passwords.

this may sound stupid, but what if i dont know what i want?

i dont know php or mysql, and i dont know asp. Of course, i would want something that allows me to expand . .

Then you want Linux. Simply because of its stability if nothing else. Its less costly for a GOOD server on linux, and its much more expandable imo.

I agree that you should go with LINUX.

- Windows performs better only on it's Enterprise edition servers that are way too expensive for the avg. person since they are meant for SUPER heavy traffic sites. If this site does not qualify as a MEGA heavy traffic site ( such as offering downloads, mP3's, MPEG's) then you only need LINUX.

I lived in melbourne, do i need to have web hosting services in melbourne? or i can simply register with one of the other sites around the world ?

What are your recommendations on a fast and reliable web hosting service

you don;t really have to because you wi'll be accessing the files remotely anyways, so what's another few thousand miles?

if you just wanna put up a simple site that won;t have over a few thousand visitors/week, most servers would work.

but as for linux, i don;t know about it being cheap....most of the places i looked a few month ago wanted $2-300/month...

Here at My work we are trying out www.Liquidweb.com and so for we are very pleased with it.

There is also www.rackspace.com which hosts alot of sites and has really good Tech support and info on things.

Don't look to pay more than $21 US/month otherwise you're being ripped.

There are a million hosting companies so you have alot of options.

www.liquidweb.com has us pay 16.60/month on a bi-annual basis, basically $100 every 6-months and we get good Bandwith, 250MB of space, MySQL database, PHP, and Shopping Carts.

look... chances are, money isn't going to be an issue here... most hosting services aren't going to charge you differently depending on what server type you want. And in all reality, you're only going to be able to tell the difference if you use certain languages.

As has been stated before, a MS server such as IIS is better suited for ASP, where a linux server, most likely running Apache, is better suited for things like PHP. The databases usually don't matter much since there are good databases for both options and most web servers run things like mysql.

Go with the linux server... you're bound to have less problems.

i also came across the term called sub-domains?

what is it? how do i come in choosing how many sub-domains i need?

subdomains are websites under your main sites with a different name on yer domain. let me show you an example:

say www.mysite.com is your website about yourself. You decide you want another website about your cat, but you want it to have a subdomain, you would make it:

http://mycat.mysite.com

a subdomain is basically another website with a name on your domain....maybe someone else can make that sound simpler then i did.

Sub-Domains, you probably don't need any or very few.

R-O-D is rite, they are just names added to the name of your site separated by a DOT.

www.australia.HermitsSite.com

They can be useful if you want to host many sites under one hosting company OR if you wanted to have separate sites for different users like JULIE.HermitsSite.com.

But a better way is to find someone who offers "Virtual hosting" which is where you can register several domain names and have all of the domains hosted by a single company under a single plan - so you can have many different sites all with their own content with LEGITIMATE top level domain names hosted on the same server at the same cost.

finally, i have registered my hosting with HostDime , which is pretty reasonable

im still playing around with the CPanel.


with the public_html permission, there are three categories:

1.User
2.Group
2.World

with mode to read, write and execute. Should i think all of them?
how can i make this folder viewable to the internet?

World is everbody on the INTERNET. Any general user who visits your site.

Users, is where you can specify specific users to have access to folders or sections of your site.

Groups, is where you can create a group like ADMINISTRATORS to include specific users in that grouping. Groups allow you to apply access or security for many ppl in one group without having to individually set each users access rights.

You want World to only have read access and that's it, not even browse access and definintly not WRITE access.
