So let me get this right.

I have WMP v9, and if I want to make my CD's into MP3 files I need to buy an add on?

I have searched old posts regarding this, and yes Kermi it is legal for me to copy my OWN Cd's etc(before you close it)..heh

So, without ppl saying goto www.google.com to find the answer,what is the easiest way ie I need it from the horses mouth- Or the best software. At the moment my mp3 player relies on downloads from IMesh etc. AND I OWN lots of Cd's.


Bloody annoying.

I have a piece of software called CDex120 which converts CD files into mp3. Have no idea if it is the best or the quickest or whatever but it does the job. I am pretty sure I just downloaded it from somewhere, it was definately free though.

Hmmm, legal you say? Well, *legally speaking* (not that I'm an expert in any shape or form), copying of copyrighted material for personal use is illegal in the UK. You can read more about this over here, but to para-phrase rather drastically:

...there is no general right of private copying in UK law, even for "media shifting". Since making any copy is an infringing act unless specifically exempted, and the only exemptions made are those listed above, private copies of a work such as copies of CD tracks in MP3 format on a PC are infringing copies.

Of course, loads of people still do it... Afterall, it is only a backup of a CD that you've already paid for, it's not like you're giving a copy to a friend.

One final quote from that web site regarding UK law:

I know it's evil, but i always used the cracked version of musicmatch jukebox. It can copy them pretty fast.

Here in the US I don't think there are any laws but court decisions have stated that "FAIR USE" is ok, which can mean making personal copies of software and music.

MP3 = loss compression

Don't use Mp3's for demoing music, only use them as a temporary file to listen to until you buy the studio quality album. When you listen to an mp3 on a decent system, you're missing alot of the important frequencies, and, that's taking for granted of the fact that the person you got the mp3 of did the best rip & encode job possible. Otherwise, you'll deal with horrid quality, popping, hissing, half songs, etc.

Here's what an mp3 will sound like on a good system(It's a tad more drastic than this, but still) -

You're forced to cds really because nobody is going to store 10,000 wavs on their hard drive, and you aren't going to download a 45mb file for a 4 minute song 10,000 times over.

Ok, I got a good shareware one. The bit that doesnt expire is the part that changes cd to mp3 so I am sorted.

The above post made me think. I sort of remember reading something about mp3 is on its way out. Is that so?

And why does WMP use the other type of files?

I read in this magazine that Ogg Vorbis was the new kid on the block that would be going up against mp3. Haven't had any experience of it myself though.

Ogg vorbis is a better file type, but less widely known. But yes, if everything goes in the way that leads to the most efficient systems, ogg will replace mp3. (Of course if that initial assertion were true you wouldn't see .gifs or VHS tapes anymore either, so go figure)

in the computer world everything will be replaced by something better, always. MP3s life will end sometime.
