This would do better in the tech forum.......
When all else fails, read the instructions.
If you're posting code, use code tags:
/* insert code here */
That all depends on your mobo, and its settings; every computer sleeps differentlyOriginally posted by jawwadalam

Though I hate StandBy........ why?
Standby is a way of allowing some processes to keep being done while conserving power as though the computer is turned off.Though I hate StandBy........ why?
It is a common mis-understanding that things cannot be run while the computer "sleeps", which is very untrue.
This method is quite nice when u must keep your pc powerd on, but want to conserve power.
It is also handy for things such as schools. If you turn a pc on and off daily (on in morn off at nite), and then compare those power bills to one where standby is used instead of shutdown, the energy conserved by standby is quite noticeable.
my comp wont even go on standby, when it does whole computer freezes and can't do anything, when i press power it restarts but goes into teh scandisk thingy saying u didn't shut down properly, so i dont use it anymore.

Hmm, when I try to go into stand by my keyboard driver prevents me. There's even a nice little pup-up window that says so

its all always on, none of it shuts off, it cuts its power in half. Thats what i tried to explain, lemme make an example.
Lets say u have a dial. u have off, on, and in the middle u have medium..
You select off and the flame of the stove is off.
You select on its very high, full power.
You select medium u have half the flame u did before.
Standby is the mdeium setting. All parts go to sleep, nothing turns off.
Now I have got the Point... Thanx..for clarification...!Originally posted by Ride -or- Die

Well, some things turn off, but very little. The hard drive stops spinning (typically), the monitor kinda shuts off. Well, more than anything it's just a giant drop in power. Everything is not working as hard, but sitting there waiting for your command to turn back on.
And yes, the energy saving is significant. The power bill for this year and last year is a big differeance. Last year my computer would be in standby when I wasn't on it, this year it's mainly running all the time. I've used 100 kilowatt hours more this year than last.
A step past standby is hibernate. I've been using that recently. It's like standby... but the system is litterally off.
Hibernate is nice, i agree. It makes an exact image of the current processes of your computer, shuts it down, then loads this imaged explorer.exe instead of the main explorer.exe, showing it as u left it.
