XP, as kermi pointed pointed out has no limit on the amount
    or ram you can install.

So, if you're going to upgrade, upgrade to XP.

That is the correct answer! At last. And what the hell would you need 1gb RAM for? Just wondering
    Such is life.

I would like to point out the with 98 I can get 650 to work fine, and although I don't need one gb, while I was using it I did notice a preformance increase.

I can see that much being usefull. I do some minor photo editing, mostly amateur, but when I'm running photoshop and working on a large project my used RAM can be over 300 MB.

For me, my 512 MB is just fine. But for somebody doing even more intensive work than photo editing, say video editing, 1 GB is probably needed.

I do video edits with anime and mp3s every now and then, and u'd be amazed how quickly half my 2 gigs get sucked up.
