    i7 6700K

Both of my machines have 4GHz Intel i7 6700K CPU's. A poster on another forum said these chips are pretty old. Simple question, is there a more up-to-date i7 that I can install on the existing mother boards that would a) improve their performance and b) improve it enough to make it worth while. I do not want to upgrade the full builds yet. They run 24/7 number crunching BOINC and Folding scientific work, improvements are always welcome for the science.

Visit the website of the motherboard manufacturer, find out what processor(s) that particular version of your motherboard supports.

Motherboards evolve just as fast as processors. So chances are you either have the best matched processor, or anything that could conceivably be "an upgrade" would be just as out of date as the one you have.
If you dance barefoot on the broken glass of undefined behaviour, you've got to expect the occasional cut.
If at first you don't succeed, try writing your phone number on the exam paper.

Thanks Salem. Just perused the list on ASUS's website, the 7700K is a small upgrade and a 0.2GHz speed hike, but I doubt that is going to make a staggering difference.
    It was the likes of:

    Intel® Core™ i7 processor 14700HX (33M Cache, up to 5.50 GHz)

20 core at 5.5GHz that appealed. I can see that folding a lot of protein.
