    Graphics card issue.

    The two machines under my desk are fitted with ASUS HS7850 graphics cards. This one is fine, as it always has been. The other machine has a problem. About a third of the display is covered with small marks. The marks consist of spots placed at the corners of a rhombus. The spots are generally light coloured, sometimes flashing. They do not appear "fixed", ie. they can be forced to move about by dragging a window or similar. The machine has been power cycled, no change. Today, I reloaded the graphics driver from the DVD, booted, and no change. The machine runs 24/7 crunching BOINC work. Before I noticed this problem, the GPU was in use by a couple of the projects in the machines science portfolio, ie. Einstein and Milky Way. I have, since seeing the issue, disabled those projects from getting new work. Any ideas of things to try before replacinging the card?

    Are they otherwise identical (same motherboard, OS) ?

    If so, you could physically swap the cards between the machines and see whether the problem follows the card, or stays with the machine.
    If you dance barefoot on the broken glass of undefined behaviour, you've got to expect the occasional cut.
    If at first you don't succeed, try writing your phone number on the exam paper.

    Sounds like a software issue. Can you verify that absolutely no other programs are running at boot-up?

    >>> Are they otherwise identical (same motherboard, OS) ?

    Pretty much so. ASUS Z170 motherboards, 4GHz i7, 16GB RAM, SSD. PSU's are not the same. Both run under Windows 64 bit 8.1. The machines were both rebuilt a few years ago with components bought as pairs from an online supplier. Keyboard and mouse go to a switch whereby I can switch machines with the click of a button. The switch also will switch the screen, but that has never worked properly, so I pull the plug out and move it to the other machine as needed. The machine with the issue is pretty much a BOINC cruncher, so I have the BOINC Manager window from both machines running on here. I rarely actually switch to that machine. I can't be sure when the problem first appeared, might have been like that for months!

    >>> physically swap the cards

    As I mentioned in the other thread, I am trying to download and process a shed load of data from a heap of dataloggers, I restarted that process once this machine rebooted. I can certainly try that once that completes, if that ever gets enough time to actually complete of course.

    >>> no other programs

    I tend to think of this machine as my regular PC, the other is a BOINC cruncher, there isn't anything else on it.
