    Windows forced reboot.

A couple of weeks ago, Microsoft forced a reboot on one of my machines claiming it was necessary. I lost a load of work when that happened and had started looking at Linux distros. Today, another of these messages appeared, it says I must reboot or it will do it in 24 hours. I stand to, once again, loose days of work. How can I stop this from happening? It is a Windows 8.1 system.

Change to Linux... I did it 17 years ago. No regrets!

I am seriously considering this, I have been ASSURED that this would not happen on Linux. Unfortunately, that doesn't help with the issue here and now though. The dataloggers I'm processing cannot pause, if the process gets interrupted, it is back to the start. I was about 80% complete when MS booted my system before.

Unplug them from the internet while you're running your long duration tests.

If that's not feasible, add lots of firewall rules to exclude all the 'M$ phone home' addresses.

If M$ doesn't like you trying to censor mummy, buy a 2nd router to act as gatekeeper, and put the exclusion lists in the router.

Or just white-list the few sites you actually want to visit during the tests.

    Or this
Disable Automatic Forced Restart After Windows Update for Windows 8 - Microsoft Community
If you dance barefoot on the broken glass of undefined behaviour, you've got to expect the occasional cut.
If at first you don't succeed, try writing your phone number on the exam paper.

Thanks Salem, I have entered this into the registry, and will discover in the morning if it worked.

Yep, long time Windows here. Having switched to Linux a number of years ago, I wouldn't think of going back.

The machine rebooted, and I lost my work. I had set the registry, but, of course, I did this after the forced reboot flag had been set. Perhaps it won't happen again.

That message popped up again this morning. The registry item, I changed last time, so it will be interesting to see what happens. In any case, I have not any of the long jobs running at the moment, and will not start any.
