    long shot but anyone familure with virtual box

    Im cheesed off ive just lost all my codeing stuff since i did the first checkers program.

    the virtual machine ground to a halt while i was doing some coding then vm crashed (bloody windows) when i restarted the machine its put it back to months ago.

    is there away of getting all my work back or is it gone.

    So the host is Windows? And what OS is the VM?

    sorry should of given those details
    host machine is win 10 vm is linux mint

    stupidly i never did a regular snapshot i have windows update etc to run in the small hours when im asleep so i never turn the laptop off and never close down the vm

    lesson learnt i guess.

    I think you might be better off asking that question on the virtualbox forums.

    Are these files present in your VirtualBox VMs\foo directory (where foo is your virtual machine name)?
    foo.vbox
    foo.vbox-prev
    foo.vdi


    If the current .vdi file is missing (presumably deleted in error), your best bet is to just shutdown windows until you can boot a live-CD.
    If the file is gone, then the only hope of recovery is to stop using the machine ASAP in the hope that whatever sectors of the disk formerly used by the .vdi file haven't been used for something else.
    If you dance barefoot on the broken glass of undefined behaviour, you've got to expect the occasional cut.
    If at first you don't succeed, try writing your phone number on the exam paper.

    vdi is there but the date is 26/4/19

    you tell me you can C,why dont you C your own bugs?

    i have decided as this laptop is out of warranty im going to put Linux on a dual boot rather than messing around with vm

    Did you try to use some file recovery software already? Not sure if it can recover all those lost files but worth a shot.
