    Well... you could try making your own operating system... Whether you should, that's a different story.
    Devoted my life to programming...

    You'll get more out of it if you look around you, and try to solve a problem that no one else has.

    Find something that annoys you, then design some s/w to make your life easier.
    If you dance barefoot on the broken glass of undefined behaviour, you've got to expect the occasional cut.
    If at first you don't succeed, try writing your phone number on the exam paper.

    I think if you are looking for someone to suggest you a big project, it's probably for the best you stick to small projects... Besides there is nothing more boring than a request for "what should I do next?". If you can't take a step on your own, choose another career.

    But just so this post of mine isn't just about me being a jerk, write... err... let me think... write a new DBMS.

    +1

    @OP
    If you're asking for people to think for you, you're gonna be stuck in the middle of the cube farm forever (or until they find someone cheaper to replace you).

    Being a source of new ideas is what keeps you employed and moving up the career ladder.

    In terms of big projects, I suggest that you do something that you are most interested about. If a writing compiler is your passion and you do have skills and knowledge about it then, it will be a great idea to consider and start with it.
