    Heatsink / cooler.

Had a bit of a surprise yesterday. The heatsink on my old board, (MSI P35 Neo2), had a big Zalman heatsink on the CPU. Figuring it would fit the new board, (ASUS Z170), I had not ordered a new. Trying to assemble the new system yesterday, ouch, I could not get the bracket for the heatsink support to fit.

I don't like it when I complain that something is not working well and the only thing people can tell is "buy a new one/get another one" but that seems like the only way to go here

The key word I used was "surprise". When you buy a heatsink, do you get a choice of mountings? When I look at the offerings online, I don't.

Each heatsink is made for a specific mounting in mind. But there are specific heatsinks are made with several mounts in mind so they fit different sockets. So check for a heatsink that's intended to be used with the current Intel sockets.

Outside of your DOS world, your header file is meaningless.

What you say surprises me if true. I don't recall EVER having asked or been asked what kind of socket or board the heatsink was to sit on. I've mailed Zalman earlier today and await their reply.

Last time I shopped for a heat sink they at least most had a Socket specification(supported sockets).

Maybe so, it doesn't alter my experience though. I tend to buy my stuff online these days though, so how could "they" ask. I'll wait for a reply from Zalman.

... and they said no, it was not compatible! The mail order firm that said I would not need anything else, have apologized, and given me a "special price" on a Noctua NH-D15S, okay, so a few extra days lost, but that is a nice heat sink. Unfortunately, I've started losing BOINC jobs now. Hopefully back running again soon.

Picked the thing up today, that is a SERIOUSLY BIG heatsink. I hope it will fit, I expect so, the designers are normally competent, but still...

    Normally competent? Heh.
It depends on your case, really. There's no standard for how high a case is supposed to be, so all goes. Better do one's research before purchasing a heatsink. That's the life of one who builds computers, as I'm sure you're well aware of.

Indeed, I built my first machine, with a Zilog Z80 chip, Veroboard and a soldering iron in 1979. In those days, the processor did not need a heatsink.
