How do i implement a firewall?

I know that a firewall filters both inbound and outbound traffic, it also examines all traffic routed between two networks to see if it meets a certain criteria. Are there different kinds of firewall? How do I implement a firewall?

A firewall is usually implemented as a filter, often at the kernel level. Some operating systems offer an interface to insert a filter that runs as a separate process. In either case, your code would open (at least) two raw (packet-level) sockets, with one representing the logical interface, and the other representing the "computer." Packets received by one socket would be examined, and if allowed, be sent out through the other socket. Extensive knowledge of network protocols is required to develop a working firewall.
