    Loptop not powering on

    Hi

My friend's laptop won't power up. She says it happened after she turned it on by presing Ctrl+ ESC -- i donno how that can be done. What do you think is going on?

    !
It's possible with some bios tweaking.

Do you have any LEDs lighting?

Its mostly a hardware issue, it just doesn't pass 'POST'.

You could also try hard-resetting the laptop(done differently for different models), duh, its hard to troubleshoot a hardware issue remotely

No LED lighting. But mouse does power up for a sec and then it too goes out again (?) Is there any solution to do without visiting the repairmen?

You really need to supply (or ask your friend to supply) more information.

What operating system? (Different operating systems have different default responses to keystroke sequences like CTRL-ESC)

What software is installed? (Various applications can respond to keystroke sequences, and change the default response of the operating system. In particular, security suites (virus scanners, etc), virtualisation technologies, screen savers, and other software suites can collectively give unexpected behaviours).

What BIOS? (This depends on vintage of the hardware, but various BIOS can support "extended settings"). What settings?

It would be unusual for a machine to be powered on by pressing CTRL-ESC. But, under some operating systems, CTRL-ESC gives access to some system features (e.g. some versions of windows bring up the main menu).

The problem could also be as simple as a dead or dying battery or power supply, or a wire coming loose (e.g. related to the power-on button).
Right 98% of the time, and don't care about the other 3%.

If I seem grumpy or unhelpful in reply to you, or tell you you need to demonstrate more effort before you can expect help, it is likely you deserve it. Suck it up, Buttercup, and read this, this, and this before posting again.

Well, you should always remove the battery when doing any hardware troubleshoot, use the mains power directly.

THanks for the inputs. But, well, the lap is not powering up, so cannot do BIOS editing or software adjustments. So only option is going to the repair guy?

That depends on how adventurous you, or your friend, are willing to be with the laptop. A "repair guy" is not omnipotent, nor able to fix things by magic.

Having physical access to the laptop - which forum members don't have - it would be easy for you to check things (leads, switches, battery, power supply, etc etc) and to experiment to see if changing things makes a difference. You could also get your friend to walk you through what she did that caused the problem - with another laptop if you have one.

If you're not willing to do that - don't feel you know enough, too concerned about breaking something - then you would be better off "going to the repair guy". That doesn't mean any guarantee of success either.

Thx, but we are not much hardware guys, no clue yet to check if the battery/power sup/switches are fried or not -- but i'm gonna check online to see if there's any help on those, but too afraid to encourage her to meddle with the hardware. She did had some problems with the KB before also (forgot to tell that, sorry). So i think it's the starting point of the problem. Btw it's a pretty new Dell laptop. Maybe she has a warranty too. We'll figure out something. THANKS FOR ALL YOU GUYS WHO TRY TO HELP US OUT

If you have warranty, then send it in for repair. Don't attempt to do anything yourself. If you manage to damage something, then the repair costs will be on you.

@Elysia. I learnt that warranty has expired 2,3 months ago. I said to her to do nothing, and take it to the place where she got it, and get it repaired. Thanks!
