    Look at all that Empty!

    O_o

I had to get a new case, and I don't like to advertise stuff, but I had to post a picture of this case with all this empty.

Almost as empty as a politician's promises, or the progress of the England football team.
If you dance barefoot on the broken glass of undefined behaviour, you've got to expect the occasional cut.
If at first you don't succeed, try writing your phone number on the exam paper.

Wonder is it still best to have drivers parallel to the surface?
Because I was taught that years ago.
I was also thinking it was best to have fans perpendicular to the surface.
But, your photo shows the drives and fans parallel to each other.

Actually, my picture just doesn't show the other fans.

So long as they're mounted correctly, their orientation doesn't matter.

Ideally, fans will move air around the drives, but in practice they don't generate enough heat for it to be much of a concern. In fact, Google has discovered that HDD life expectancy is not generally jeopardized 'till 45.C.

Pfft, wimps. Where I live, my HDD gets up to like 46 C on the reg. Still has no problems, actually. SMART tests and data said everything was okay too and my HDD is like 2 years old. I have had two other HDDs fail on me before but HDDs are like the most unimportant part of a computer, tbh. The max safe temp according to the manufacturer is 65 C so I'll stick with that. The only reason it heats up so much is 'cause DotA 2 + summer = hot.

Either way, have you guys heard of these fanless CPU heatsinks? They're like $70 - $80 and they look massive but there's no fan! How amazing is that?

Edit : Actually, the first time I built the computer I'm using now, my first HDD failed like maybe a month into it. That was when I decided to not torrent Windows (blah blah, matching hash strings, blah blah) and instead installed Ubuntu. And that's what started it all... It began with Ubuntu then some computer science courses and now all of this... Arch is a lot better.

And my other HDD was a replacement one for the one I bought but I had impatiently bought another one so the one that died was extra. The one that hasn't died is some 7200 RPM one with a 64 bit cache so I think the general quality improvement over those cheap 5400 RPM ones is more proportional to lifecycle.

    You admit crime?
Wait right there! I'll go call the police!

Btw, the hard drive is probably the most important piece in a computer because it holds all your data! If it goes kaboom all your data is gone!
Unless you have backups, of course. But who keeps backups in a separate house/location? If you don't, and your house burns down, it's goodbye to all data anyway.
Well, unless you use an online backup service that is, but all I've seen so far are complete garbage.

The only thing that's important on my computer is my code which is on github. Everything else is on Steam, in email and I may or may not have abilities to regenerate my music library. Every bit of software I've been using has been free. I can't even remember the last time I paid for software that wasn't a videogame so everything I have on my HDD is somewhere out there on the internet.

Yeah, HDDs are important but after how many I've gone through, I've learned to not rely on them lol.

Edit : And I admitted that I didn't commit a crime! I chose the moral high ground! Also because, who would download a non-matching version of Windows? That's just asking for your system to be hacked.

Your reply could be interpreted as that you implied that you were torrenting Windows.

You're right; how was I comparing those hash strings?

    >_>

    Get at me, NSA!

But seriously, once I found out about the possibility of torrents not being unaltered, I figured it would just be safer to use Linux and I had to learn it anyway for my undergraduate research at the time so it made a lot of sense. I must say, using Windows is also a lot easier now because Windows is like Linux with more GUIs on top which is kind of nice at times.

Fun fact, I make my girlfriend learn Linux to use my computer because she has some Steam games and if she wants to play the game, she's gotta learn the machine.

HDD fails - and of course the last backup was too old... and something unreplaceable is lost

Excuse me for saying that it's naive to have something irreplaceable on a personal HDD without it being externally backed-up, whether it be through the internet or on a USB or something such as that. If something is irreplaceable, how can you not immediately make back-ups?

In my experience, HDDs die the easiest which is why I'm a little jaded in the sense that I always anticipate them failing. But RAM, CPU, GPU and MoBo all seem far more reliable so in my opinion, it's just best to keep everything backed up on the internet.
