Whats your take on Gentoo. I am downloading Gentoo 11. So whats your opinion of this flavor of Nix? Anything I should know?
I just got back my laptop after 1 month. It crapped out. Luckily I had a waranty! They formatted and reinstalled Windows 7. Which is an OK OS but i prefer Linux and the freedom it provides!

So I just walk in to the computer store, P.C. Richard & Son and demand a refund or windows tax? They will probably look at me like i have 3 heads! How exactly do i go about this?
It has already been 3 months since The initial purchase. I am assumig i am still able to claim this Windows tax as long as my warranty is still good.

More trouble than it's worth, you'll eventually get your money but you're going to get the run-around quite a bit.
Well what kind of money are we talking about? The price for a windows 7 OS CD or something like $50?
Don't remember exactly, I know it's under 200. I want to say like 80-120.
I think $100 is worth a bunch of phone calls!
You don't have to get rid of windows. I just used this from a new windows 7 laptop:
Free Partition Magic alternative. Best Free Partition Manager Freeware for Windows 2000/XP/Vista/7 32 bit & 64 bit - EaseUS Partition Master Home Edition.
To shrink the main partition, then intalled gentoo. Both OS's are fine.
I recommend backing up the boot sector first from a liveCD (after you repartition, but before you install grub):
dd if=/dev/sda of=bootsector.back bs=512 count=1
Notice it's /dev/sda, and not /dev/sda1 or anything. If something doesn't work out or you later want to remove grub, you can put that back:
dd if=bootsector.back of=/dev/sda bs=512 count=1

Well after 4 hours, Gentoo is finally done downloading. I burned a DVD and booted off it. Come to find out the Live CD does not have the option to install. Im kind of mad! The only other download I see is the minimal. I really do not feel like building Gentoo from ground up. Anyone have a link for me?

Gentoo's nice, but if you want an easier time have you thought of ubuntu or linux mint?
Or you could go with the two-command install - Gentoo - Uncyclopedia, the content-free encyclopedia
Well Fordy, before my laptop crapped out and I sent it in for repair, I was running ubuntu 11.04 Ive been using ubuntu for a 5 or so years now. I always have problems with it. Thats why im trying to switch! I installed ubuntu 10.10 for nkw untill I can find something to replace it.
Switching is fine....but, if you had had problems with Ubuntu, you're going to have 10 times more problems in Gentoo.Originally Posted by Annonymous

Manasij7479, Im sorry my reply was pretty vague huh? What I meant was that it gave my computer problems, not me. For some reason it would cause hardware failures. Like my HDD. The system(OS) would crash months later after an install and I would have to reinstall it. I ended up going through 6 HDD's. I eventually said ef it and just ran a live cd 24/7.
Ubuntu if anything is fun and easy to use!

Strange, I've been using Linux distros including Ubuntu for about 4 years and never had that kind of problems.
If it was really the OS that was causing it(which I doubt very much), then switching to another distro would not help at all, since the core is the same.
