I have a 6 year old laptop (still going strong!), and am wanting to give windows 7 a shot. I read on the windows website that it requires 1GB of RAM, and my machine has .99 GB. Will I have problems running 7 on my machine, given that it meets all other requirements? Thanks.

The general recommendations for windows 7 are that you have 24gb available on your disk to install the OS, 2gb ram to run the 32 bit version and 4gb for the 64 bit.... You can squeeze it into 15gb, 1gb and 2gb if you shut down enough background tasks... but it's performance will suffer.
Windows 7 should run fine on those specs.
Just don't expect a miracle - Windows might just eat maybe 300 MB memory, leaving 700 MB for programs.

For a default setup(about 2 yrs ago), it consumed about 500 MB out of a Gig on my netbook (though a 1.7 Ghz chip may had something to do with it).
Other than that, everything was quite snappy, unless (err often) I tried to open too many things at once.
SP1 has also trimmed memory usage, so a valid estimation is between 300-500 MB, I would think.
