    cgi programming in windows.

    hi guys,

    i urgently need to know what i have to do to run cgi programs in windows.

    i have installed apache 2.2 and active state perl.

    i am not understanding how to edit the httpd conf file given below:
    after editing what is the next step to run a simple hello world program.please help me.

    Have you got the server to run at all? Out of the box, it should, and you should be able to go to http://localhost and see a page that says "It works!".

    I've never used apache on windows, but I've used it quite a bit on linux, including setting up and troubleshooting remote servers. Apache is potentially a pretty complex beast; like a lot of things, it takes some time to learn and get comfortable with. When you try and start it (from the command line) and it chokes on anything in the configuration, it should give you some specific details, including the line number where the problem is.

    If that happens and you can't solve the problem, post the error here. If you get it running, find out where the error log is (somewhere behind the ServerRoot directory) because that will explain any subsequent problems with your cgi stuff (eg, perl errors will get logged there).

    Then just put your script in the cgi-bin directory and try http://localhost/cgi-bin/myscript.pl. I haven't done a default cgi thing in a while, so I am not sure if that is the correct path (apache's "cgi-bin" is actually outside of the document tree). However, it looks like you have +ExecCGI set on the document root directory (which is actually Apache2.2/htdocs), so you could also try placing a script there. In any case, if it doesn't work there are 3 common reasons:

    1) You get a 404 Not Found, indicating something about paths or permissions is wrong.
    2) You get a 500 Error, indicating perl tried to run the script but failed.
    3) You get a literal copy of the script, indicating it was found but not executed -- this is a configuration issue involving +ExecCGI.

    Again, like a lot of things, it seems simple but can be very frustrating at first. Don't get overwhelmed, you will get what you want eventually, lol. Of course, the documentation is very helpful; you can access a local copy thru the server (not so useful if it isn't running..) or:

    All the configuration options are listed alphabetically if you click on "Run-time Configuration Directives" down the left side. Generally, windows specific stuff is in place with everything else, but you may also want to have a look at "Platform Specific Notes" in the right column.

    Also beware that apache and perl may cache certain things in an irritating way (they don't check modification times), so if your script throws an error, you correct it, and the error remains, try stopping and restarting apache. Modifying the configuration, obviously, requires this, since it is only processed at start-up.

    good to hear that sir.because i turned to windows after i couldn't run perl scripts on fedora 9.

    i wanted to practice programs for my upcoming lab test.i have installed fedora on virtual box.i have stored the files in cgi-bin folder,given the permissions to execute also.but i get an internal server error.
    if you could tell me how i can do this in fedora,it would be great.

    Well, another thing I've never done is use virtual box, but presuming everything is the same, it's "yum search httpd", then "yum install [whatever]" -- you can get help with stuff like that at:

    I doubt it will be much easier or harder than windows, so if you are more comfortable on windows, doing this on linux will probably not solve your problems.

    Probably a lot more people with apache and cgi experience too. The first slap you will get there is to:

    sir,i checked the error log file.
    the two errors i got were:
    permission denied.
    premature termination of script headers.
    the code i ran is:

    Apache (at least on *nix) needs to start up as a privileged user in order to open a low numbered port (normal http is 80). But after that, it switches its user id to a non-privileged user for security. Ie, you may start it as root, but it does not run root.

    That means the directory containing the script either needs to belong to the non-privileged apache user, or should be world readable. And the script itself needs to be readable and executable.

    Which might explain why you have been unable to execute regular perl scripts on fedora, lol, if you are not used to unix style permissions. By default, a new file is created 644, meaning the owner has read/write, everyone else has read. However, a perl script also needs to be executable, which 644 does not give execute permission to anybody, even the owner.

    Read man chmod, and try setting everything relevant this way:

    chmod 755 myscript.pl

    at first, then you can try reducing the permissions and/or changing the owner (man chown) until you are happy that way (this may or may not be relevant to how your assignment is evaluated -- if all you are handing in is the script, just leave it 755 for now).

    Learning *nix, apache, and cgi all at the same time is probably going to be an uphill battle at first.

    almost 6 hours and still no result. tried everything.
    the perl script is being displayed on the browser like html content .....

    That's problem #3 I mentioned in post #2

    You have to have +ExecCGI on the directory with the script. You can do that via "Options" in a <Directory> section: core - Apache HTTP Server

    friend,
    i tried adding the options but still the contents appear like html.
    i want to run the perl script after saving it in C:\Program Files\Apache Software Foundation\Apache2.2\htdocs
    because when i try to save and run from cgi-bin,it says forbidden.
    could you modify the above httpd.conf file in post1 so that i can copy paste?...
    i needed it badly

    Did you absorb what I said about unix style permissions? It is very important, without that you will constantly beating your head against a wall.

    Also: I again am unfamiliar with using virtual box, but fedora uses a default SELinux that affects apache. This may complicate running scripts, and you don't want to have to tangle with configuring SELinux right now; just turn it off. Check for an /etc/selinux/config; if it exists, open it in an editor. Change:

    Okay, all that only matters if you are still doing the fedora thing. If not, you'll have to figure out how Windows NTFS permissions work (I can't help with that). Anyway...

    Add this:

    I notice that there is a <Directory> section for cgi-bin in your config that is slightly different from this; that might prevent execution, because it says:

        Options None
    The "AllowOverride" has to do with .htaccess files. You can place these in individual directories to override the current configuration. So create a file that looks like this:

    AddHandler cgi-script .cgi .pl
    Options +ExecCGI
    <Files *>
    Header set Cache-Control: "private, pre-check=0, post-check=0, max-age=0"
    Header set Expires: 0
    Header set Pragma: no-cache
    </Files>
    Name it ".htaccess" and place it in the directory where your script is. Make sure it is readable by the apache process, permissions wise (on *nix, 644). You will also need to uncomment this line in the apache conf (remove the leading #):

    #LoadModule headers_module modules/mod_headers.so
    This module processes the "Header" directives in the .htaccess file, those add http headers to prevent the browser from caching anything, which is what you want with dynamic content.

    Make sure you read up on all the directives used here (eg, AddHandler); apache is sort of byzantine, and it is easy to screw everything up by changing an insignificant seeming detail, so the better you understand it, the less it will get in your way.

    Finally, the first thing that will happen with the scripts you posted here is a "bad header" error. They need to begin with:

    sorry for the late reply.i have already modified .conf file and its working fine.thank you bro so much for your help.
    in fedora,the problem was same,it was not with permissions but with the .conf file.i had to add options and un-comment at a few places....thanks a lot.
