For Windows, gVim is pretty cool.
Nano is newbie friendly but pretty bare-bones.
Vim isn't newbie friendly but very advanced. You can also edit you own syntax highlighting colors. You probably could with Nano too.
It's graphical Vim. It is the GUI version. You can use on Windows or Linux.
I prefer console applications-- so plain old Vim for me!
i'm hardcore GUI user :'( need to sort that out..
even in Windows I never really delved into cmd..Just learnt a few commands is all.
I just don't know how to learn to use an OS in console mode..

Maybe you should read a few basic Unix books.. or maybe read a book on Operating Systems in general.
I recommend the book "Operating System Concepts" by SGG. It's a hefty book, 900+ pages but will teach you all about OSes, Windows and *nix based.
yeah, i did a bit of OS. but it just talks about the concepts instead of the practical. I will check your book out. Thanks man.
