I just downloaded and installed ubuntu linux latest edition.
My problem is that the screen remains black after it prompts me to choose for extra installation options.
Is there any software to determine if my laptop's hardware is supported by ubuntu?
Do you know what the problem might be?

Note that the screen not just remains black, it turns off! ( The screen, not the laptop )

I've followed a link found about ubuntu black screens.
This time the BIOS displays boot information, but the boot freezes at a line:

*Setting Sensors Limits [ OK ]

or something like that...

Yeah for some reason ubuntu has a problem with NVIDIA graphics cards. Couldnt get it to run on mine either. I'm using SUSE and it works fine though.

Ubuntu didn't install on my machine with an nvidia card.

I've installed Ubuntu on another machine with onboard graphics, and it is now working great.

You could disable the card temporarily in the BIOS settings, so that Ubuntu uses onboard graphics (or software GL, not really sure which Ubuntu defaults to), then download drivers here and install them.
It should go something like this:

cd path/to/installer
sudo sh ./NVIDIA-Linux-x86-256.53-pkg1.run

Then the next time you reboot enable the video card again, and all should be well. Hopefully.
NVIDIA actually has really good support for linux (word on the street is that it trumps ATI by a mile), it's just that the default open-source nvidia driver is kind of patchy.
