webpage looks different in different browsers

    Hi folks.

I know a lady who is selling clothes on eBay. Here is a sample listing:

APPLE BOTTOMS BOTTOM BLING NEW JEANS SEXY SZ 18-20 - eBay, Jeans, Womens Clothing, Clothing, Shoes, Accessories. (end time 14-Feb-10 21:15:49 AEDST)

For some reason, the measurements show up in IE, but don't show up in Firefox, so she has to add them to the bottom of the listings, and it's too far down for most people to see.

So in browsers where they show up, there should be measurements about midway through the listing, then again at the bottom. But in Firefox, the only measurements are the ones added at the bottom.

Why is this happening? I was wondering if someone who knows HTML can have a look at the source and explain it?

This lady has gotten a report from eBay to show that only 8% of the people looking at her listings are using IE, so most people won't be able to see the measurements, so she's getting lots of questions about measurements.

    Thanks in advance.

That has to be some of the most unreadable markup I've come across in a long, long time. Whatever your lady friends used to generate this HTML, she did it without reading the instructions and created a mess of code behind the scenes. So much so that I'm sure there is more than one syntax error in the HTML which means it's up to the browser to interpret how to fix it. ... and this does not look like a fun page for a browser to figure out.

My opinion is that you should tell the lady to hire a web developer because what I'm seeing really should be redone from scratch. That said... at least she has a page that she can basically hand to a developer and say "Make it look like that..." and in my opinion, it's not a bad looking advert for her product.

Fall out from the ongoing browser wars continues. Once again, the word "standards" to MS means something best ignored if the word "monopoly" can be brought into play.

So some dude wrote the page on windows and got it to work on IE, meaning it could be full of quirks which won't work on standards complaint stuff.

Altho I'm looking at the page in FF and not sure if I see the problem. I'm not bothering with the source tho. But here's a hint: This is never about HTML. Almost. It is almost always a css or javascript (there's some js in there) issue. Based on your description of the issue, really very probably CSS.

That listing has got to hit every one of my "I can't stand that" buttons I've ever had for bad design, bad images, bad animations, bad fonts, bad text, bad positioning, bad layout, bad use of color, bad border, bad impression... BAD BAD BAD.

I can't describe how much I LOATH that.

I think I'll not go back to ebay for a month in hopes that I can get that image out of my head.

I will accept your apology for posting a link to that now please.

The only thing missing is those little flaming torch animated gifs. That and a nice "starry sky" background with much <h1> in neon green & multiple exclamation marks: the page would be perfect.

Then we should put two sidebars in crammed with superfluous menu items and links, and fix width the page so it only fills half your screen. Except everyone is doing that now anyway, so it might not be so "attention getting".

    Code:
    ... <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />...
That's what you get for using Microsoft Office

Interesting she seems to have other websites, which I'm not posting because of forum advertising rules . Seems to be obsessed with "justonemore...", having several websites like justonemoreanimation and justonemorewebsite. Implying "I know they annoy you, but just one more".

The comment is even more concerning: "An eBay Store maintained by: animatemytemplate" (Hint: Username).

No, she's not. She's asked for help on an eBay seller's forum - not getting many replies though.

Zacs: She has an eBay store. All eBay stores have "maintained by "ebayusername", meaning the items listed are maintained by the store owner. What is concerning about that? Don't know about anything other websites that she may have. She's a clothes retailer on eBay.

All of you geeks gotta stop thinking like programmers and start thinking like people who would buy a pair of pants that say "Apple Bottoms" on the thigh. :P

The design is just fine for the market she's trying to reach. A.K.A. not someone who's idea of a nice evening is settling down with a cup of tea and the latest revision of the C++ Standard.

Well, point taken. In retrospect, I guess the "Apple Bottoms" marketing strategy has one thing going for it...

They didn't name the pants "Cottage Cheese Bottoms".
