Coolest project I ever did was program a stepper motor controller and a few switches, to have the motor open some safes that we'd lost the combo's to.
Ribbon cable from a pci slot on the mobo, to the motor controller main board, which sent the signals to the motor drive board, which commanded the motor. The motor attached to the safe via strong circular magnets with projecting threaded bolts. A drilled and tapped plastic pipe fitting with cushioned screws, held the dialer securely as it was turned.
This is a slow way to open a safe, but it was way less expensive than the locksmiths were asking.
