    Do you type properly or use your own style?

    Given the debate in the "Touch Typing" thread, I thought we might benefit from a poll.
    Do you use proper Touch Typing (i.e. using all fingers on both hands), or do you use Hunt & Peck with just 2 fingers, or some strange combination that you came up with yourself?

    Proper touch typing is not "using all fingers on both hands". For proper touch typing, you also need to hit each key with the proper finger. I am close, but there are a couple keys that I use the wrong finger on (the 'p', 'q', and 'b' keys). Therefore, I guess I use my "own style".

    My own style.
    My typing teacher in high school challenged me to a contest to see if I could type more words than her. She was trying to force me to use the standard typing approach and I refused. If I won the contest she said I could use whatever form I wanted to. I beat her by 30 WPM and I was more accurate using my own style. She scored 75 WPM and I nailed down a whopping 105 WPM with no errors. From that day on she left me alone and I got an A in the class.

    Lesson: Don't challenge a super nerd who plays Infocom and Kings Quest games to a typing contest. Super nerd's survival in said games is solely dependent on how fast he can type in commands.

    Same here. Not King's Quest or Infocom, but MUDs.
    But I do not type as fast as you and I have a higher fail rate. You are a bigger nerd

    EDIT:
    Cprogramming pools are the equivalent of "An university latest study revealed that..."
    They prove nothing and are always biased, incomplete or useless.

"Finding the smallest program that demonstrates the error" is a powerful debugging tool.

    I use my own style too. And I type properly. Except for "common places"

    ... and lots of other typos.

    Took that silly typing test...

    Net Speed: 95 WPM
    Accuracy: 97%
    Gross Speed: 97 WPM

    That actually kind of sucks. My fingers are cold.

    And yes, I type "improperly." I don't even hit the same key with the same finger all the time.
    Code:
    //try
    //{
    	if (a) do { f( b); } while(1);
    	else   do { f(!b); } while(1);
    //}

    depends on the language
    All problems in computer science can be solved by another level of indirection,
    except for the problem of too many layers of indirection.

    I got a typing speed of just 26WPM(net speed) by using my own style. What's the difference between net speed and gross speed? Looking at all of you pro's typing speed I think I'm in a wonderland!!

    I'm thinking that gross speed does not account for errors. I did a small test typing slow enough to make sure I didn't get any errors and gross speed was the same as net speed.

    Then I introduced a few errors but wrote the exact amount of words. Gross speed remained the same at 35WPM but net speed was reduced to 33WPM.

    I also have my own style in which I use my left thumb and pinky to cover control, alt, shift, tab and winkey while my ring finger move left to cover the qaz column and my middle finger covers both the wsx and edc columns.
    I can actually type fairly quickly: 60-70 wpm average and I can peak over 100.

    In 8th grade, my teacher also had a rule where if you could type faster than her, you would get an automatic A. Since I couldn't I had to type the "right way" and usually scored only 30-40.
    I copied it from the last program in which I passed a parameter, which would have been pre-1989 I guess. - esbo
