Wifi boost....!!!!

i am new to networking, so do pardon me if i sound by my questions.......



I live in an apartment in which wi-fi facility i enabled.....Is it possible to boost up the net speed by using my own additonal personal router in my room.....or do my router needs to get the authentication from the main hub.......is it possible to bypass router password....ang get my router in to the network...???


Is that illegal...??

Think of it like a chain - the apartment's wifi broadcaster is just one of the many links in that chain. Any router you connect to is just another link in that chain. If your router still connects with their router, all the traffic still has to go through their router. So you're not going to get a significant increase in speed in that regard.

However, the strength of the signal of can also make a difference, so if the signal you're receiving is fairly week in your part of the apartment complex, you may consider getting what's called a repeater, and putting it in the window sill, or some place that's as close as you can get to the signal. It would pick up the signal and amplify it, so that anywhere in your apartment you have a strong signal. No guarantees on that making a difference though - there's a lot of variables. I don't see why anything like that would be illegal, unless it violates the terms of your lease.

I believe the repeater can be configured to get authentication from the main hub the same way your computer does, you just set it up to use the same password. However, if their signal is encrypted and yours isn't, that would almost certainly violate some terms. And anything you to do "bypass" any kind of security device is illegal in the US, and possibly elsewhere.

If part of your question is, "Will plugging a cable directly into the 'wifi' router improve my connection?" the answer is definitely yes.

You don't have to use the antennae, and unless you have to, don't bother. Even with the thing five feet away, an ethernet cable will be noticeably faster and much more consistent.

It sounds like maybe you meant the wifi is from an outside source tho. In that case, you could use your own personal router as a reciever, and plug directly into that, which will make it easier for you to experiment with positioning the receiver. But if you do not plug directly into that, your experiments will be complicated by "the connection" between computer and receiver.

In other words, if you get your own router, attach it to the computer with a cable. The other version is like putting an antennae on your roof, then instead of running a wire to the TV, you use a smaller transmitter from the antennae to a pair of rabbit ears on the TV.
