where does the installer download MSVC++ 2008 to?

I am upgrading to a new hard drive, so need to have MSVC++ 2008 on the new drive(Win XP).

The installer program must have downloaded the 700MB of files somewhere on my current drive(Win XP), before installing. I can't find it anywhere, although I can find the 300MB of MSDN(documentation for Visual Studio), which exists as a binary.

I am currently on dial-up speeds, so can't realistically d/l 700M.

If anyone can tell me where the installer downloads MSVC to, I can copy the files to a USB drive and transfer it to the new drive.

Google has not yielded any answers, and for some reason I can't log into the MSDN forum to ask this question.

When you click "download", it downloads the 2.7mb installer. Where does the installer dowload the 700MB MSVC++ files?

I am on dial-up speed. I don't want to d/l 700MB. I already have MSVC++ installed on my current drive, so I want to copy the files already on the drive(downloaded by the installer program) and transfer them to the new drive.

Well, it downloads the 2.7mb files not the 700mb ones. Its a web installer so you'll just have to run it. It doesn't take that long though so you might want to try it.

Most likely somewhere in Temp (Under documents and settings)

The Microsoft installers are also known for extracting stuff and things to the drive which has the most space. The may apply to downloads, as well, so you may want to expand your search.
I'll see if I can figure out where it downloads the files, though.

Downloaded files seem to be in %Temp%\30729.01\1033 for me.

I don't know about that. That may or may not be. Lots of poor installers out there.
I just monitored with Process Monitor when it was downloading.
And btw, it's just ~80 MB.

I remember when I was installing MSVC++ 2008, the connection status monitor(in the Windows Taskbar) showed about 700MB download, and then 300MB for the Visual Studio documentation.

I've found a "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0", which is 951 MB, which contains a "Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Express Edition with SP1 - ENU" directory, and a "MSDN Library for Visual Studio 2008 Express Editions SP1" directory, and lots of other directories.

But it appears these directories were installed by the installer, and don't contain the setup files.

Oh well, I'll just have to find a way to d/l the entire program onto the new drive.

Well, it downloads the 2.7mb files not the 700mb ones. Its a web installer so you'll just have to run it. It doesn't take that long though so you might want to try it.

Maybe you missed the part where he said he's using a dial-up connection?

Anyways, there should be a link somewhere to download the .iso version so you can burn it to CD/DVD somewhere. That way you won't have this problem later.
