My computer's motherboard or processor died on me on March 25, so I had to reload everything. When I tried to reinstall the compiler, Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Express, it wouldn't except my registration code that worked before (I have it backed up). How can I fix this, considering I've previously registered it?

Anyone? How could I have the whole installer program saved to disk instead of just the download manager? I've also tried downloading the 2008 Express edition, but all I get is a 0-byte file (empty) and won't run because of that. Attempts to download 2005 from Microsoft lead me to the 2008 version where I have the 0-byte file problem. Even the library has this same problem (though I get an extra file with a "PART" extension that cannot be opened). This is starting to drive me nuts. I still have the original, working installer, for 2005, but the registration code I was given at the time I downloaded that installer won't work for some reason.

I think you need to just download the newer 2008 express. I had the same problem I think they just dsabled 2005 express registration once 2008 came out.
Hmm. Okay, then when I download the 2008 version, why do I get an EXE file that's exactly zero bytes? All I can think of is that either the file server is down (but then you'd get a 404 or "can't find server"), they've got the wrong file (rare, but it can happen, though it happening for 2 files is highly unusual), or they've got a bug with their download system, preventing a proper download. I was able to use that download manager from about 2 years ago or so and I didn't have any problems having it download the 2005 version - all 319 MB of it. It just didn't take my registration key that I had backed up before.

The registration is based on the specific installation fo windows, you may have to reregister it, if thast even possible for 2005. I have no idea why you couldnt download the new version, unless you dont have a legitimate copy of windows, the downlaod requires an actual workign copy of microsofts validation plugin.
I found out what the problem was. I tried downloading DScaler from SourceForge but that, too, was a 0-byte file. It's a bug with Firefox, class 4 in my 0 to 8 scale. I just installed the faster Firefox 2.0.0.0 instead of 3.0.0.8 and it worked without any further incidents. At least, this way, I don't have troubles downloading anything (they otherwise repeatedly stop midstream and don't resume for versions beyond 2.0.0.4 or something). I wonder where you report bugs for Firefox at.... So, I'll try the reregistering route and see what happens.

The problem is now resolved, though I have new ones not entirely related.
1. Where is the CHM file at that contains the library (ya know, for looking up details on a Windows function and its parameters (e.g. the DestroyMenu function))?
2. Where can I get the library stuff for DirectX?

2008 comes with the WinSDK. Does it not work with going to Visual Studio Help?
Btw, Firefox isn't the best download manager (can't even resume downloads once you close the browser) - I would suggest a 3rd party of kind. Lots of them out there.
I'm trying to create a start menu shortcut but even with doing a search for *.chm, I don't get anywhere. I didn't see the DirectX SDK and I don't know if the Windows SDK is installed or not. I have the MSDN library though - it was listed. I'll need DirectX though so I can make the 3D modeling program I want for my 2D game (it's 2.5D - rendered in 3D, but plays like it was 2D).

I haven't experienced what you're talking about (I think I'm newer - my version is 3.0.3). But it would be wise to search Bugzilla thoroughly before you report something new as maybe someone else had a similar problem with the version you were using, or they fixed it in a later release.
I don't think it's available in chm format.
It's available in Microsoft's Document Explorer format.
