I've called Dell yesterday and before they send me a tech to fix it at home, they need me to call the support line -- which is not free -- and reformat my computer following their instructions and then go through a serie of tests, etc. They don't seem to believe me when I say it's the hard drive that's responsible since I told them (because they asked) that Dell's diagnostic utility passed all tests. Oh and the only way I can get my money back (from the non toll-free line) is if they admit my hard drive is broken. That's complete bs and I'm actually ........ed at them.
Spinrite should be able to fix it if it is the hard-drive.
With MS you always need a huge grain of salt, but the majority of developers have been running it on their dev stations for at least 9 months. So it's clearly stable enough for dev work.Originally Posted by zacs7

Dell wouldn't do anything more unless I format my hard drive and so I did. It's considerably faster and I would consider it as running at a normal pace right now. I don't know if this is a temporary fix or permanent fix but it did the job.
I would run the HD benchmark again to see if the figures are normal. I wouldn't want it to appear to work now, but fail right after the warranty period.

The graph was clearly going down almost following a linear function (-0.5x + 55.8 approx.) with huge drops lasting less than a second, starts at 55.8MB/s and finishes at 28-29MB/s

Quick scan reveals no errors and temperature averages around 40-41 degrees.

Rest of the numbers look alright, at least on the right order of magnitude (though a bit on the slow side for modern harddrives).

I'm sorry. No, x is % of the benchmark done. With this said I realize that it would be less than -0,5x but I approximated this coefficient in order to give you an idea of the slope, not to be exact ^^
I can't run the benchmark for longer, no. That would have been interesting, especially since it had a slight curve (outward of both axis, not inward). Almost like a really open quadratic.
