Why?
*Linux Mint iso (KDE) -- 1.0GB
Comes with all operating system components + TONS of software!(I can provide a list if you want)
*Windows Vista Ultimate iso -- 3.49GB !
Ships with only Operating system. Buy software separately.
I'm not bashing windows or anything, just want to know why such huge difference in size of the iso(s)?
Because Windows is bloated. It has a lot of stuff, drivers, other things in it, some of which you really don't need.
I don't know specifics, however.

I meant to say downloading the huge iso with my internet connection is a pain....(will take 2 days to complete) not that using vista is a pain. Many of my friends are running it without any problems.

I think the size is so that you can enlarge all the icons up to 256*256 w/o loss of quality. The most interesting thing I discovered during my MS SQL Server training course was that if you blow them up to full size and drag them around a bit vista crashes.
That Vista is so huge and "bloated."
