    glibc actually has some good guidelines on binary compatibility. If only I could find them right now ...

    Do the guidelines apply to ancient versions of glibc? As in, 12 years old? Many of our customers are still running Red Hat 4.

    They apply, but they don't dictate compatibility. Wasn't 12 years ago still glibc1?

    Yeah, obviously those who build the libraries, the ones in charge who are at fault for the big code, which is of course what I meant.

    Be careful what you say. "Building" a library usually refers to compiling it from source so that you can use it.
