i tried fedora a few months ago, but i do find suse a lot easier to handle.
but i'd suggest trying fedora first because it has a larger user base, so greater support for problems you might face.

there are specific linux distributions that are built so a linux box can act as a router. Smoothwall is one of those distributions. I saw it on techtv and is certainly one of the best distributions...
