There's nothign realyl wrogn with the kernel, its mostly the rest of the OS (i.e. the various distros) that I find clunky and obtusely written by a bunch of drunken retarded gorillas on crack. I am biased though, since i do most of my development for windows.
The good thing about Linux is that it comes with so many different tools & apps. The bad thing about Linux is that it comes with 5-10 different versions of just about everything, so unless you have all the time in the world to research which one is better, you don't know which ones to install; and the 1 line description for each app is usually useless in deciding whether it's better than the other 10 things that do that same thing.
