If you look on NVidia's site the 512mb 8800 GTS is a special breed. It cannot be mixed (SLIed) with any other card except another 512mb GTS. My original choice was the 512, but after reading NVidia's specs I upped it to a 640mb GTS.
The shader clock on the 512 is the second fastest in the 8800 lineup with the 8800 ultra topping the list. The actual memory clock I believe is faster on the 512mb GTS than on the 8800 768mb ultra.
But cards beyond the 640mb GTS are just way out of my range - or moreso way out of the range I feel comfortable with. Just because I can afford a 600 dollar card does not mean I'm gonna grab one. As it is the GPU is running about 150 bucks more than the CPU which is insane.
