PSU's
ok some of you guys at least seem to know a bit about hardware. has anyone tried running durons on a 250W psu? i don't want to buy the parts and find i need the new psu. i may as well go to the extra effort of persuading my parents to buy the parts for an Athlon XP system if its needs a 300W psu.

AMD Durons require *at least* a 250W PSU. So, Yes. They will run.

thanks. since 250W is minimum i think i'll try to dream up a reason why my parents want a athlon XP system. other than so i can run of with it to uni :)

The power supply is the most underrated piece of equipment in the box. Most makes are cheap and made in taiwan. This is not necessarily a bad thing because the good ones are made there too.So how do you spot a good one?
Difficult. Good psus are not cheap. I paid £70 for mine. Thats around $100 for our us friends. A good psu will have all voltages regulated to at the maximum 5% and will not supply ac transients to the motherboard or hard drives. Most psus dont even get close to this.
These are the best makes for power supplys.....
Antron
Antec
Enermax
PC Power and cooling.
All these suppliers have data sheets available for perusal on the web.
For a duron system, good agp card,2 cd/dvd drives,2 hdd and a couple of usb devices you would be better off getting a psu of around 350w. 250w will leave you underpowered if you expand your system a little. Better to have too many watts than too few.
