Where's the option for Crimson Editor?
And once out, possibly Emerald Editor and the like.
Did you classify Notepad and Kate as equals?
>> Is that a Pokemon thing?
Haha.
Unless Bulbasaur and Pikachu are added to the list, I consider it lacking.
Visual Studio is still the all-round package to beat I think.
vim/gvim
Visual Studio on Windows, KDevelop on Linux.
It's a rather short list isn't it?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_text_editors
I'm the only one who voted for a Notepad type, check out Notepad++, it is sswweeeett.
I like that there's an emacs option and not a VI one :D
I've only used emacs for Mathematica scripts and found it frustrating. Any good for C?
Emacs for life, yo.
Eight Megabytes And Continuously Swapping?
Why don't you add a real man's text editor to the list, like I don't know, say VIM?
I do realize it's a short list, and I should have added a few more, but I tried to be broad in the categories, so I named some of the types. Emacs got it's own category cuz it's my fave and for us *nixers, it's popular.
Yeah, not fond of vi, I prefer nano if I were to go with a editor like that.
Not fond of KDevelop either, it's not a bad thing, I just prefer my editor and terminal.
twomers,
I'm definitely NOT calling them equals, we can all agree that Kate is superior :D
I just listed that as a general category for those type of editors.
Glad to see all the feedback, it's interesting stuff.
Emacs should be under Notepad then, otherwise you should have placed vi in a category of its own. Your bias just means that vi wins as long as Emacs does not have more votes than all the other three categories combined :pQuote:

i don't see how nano is at all like vim, other than that it is a text editor
I wasn't talking about vim, I've never used vim, hell I don't even have it installed. I was talking about vi, and how vi and nano are console editors? Can't think of a better term atm, but you know what I mean.
Just about nobody uses plain Vi (although its handy being on almost anything UNIX off the bat). Vim on the other hand is in the same class as EMACS.
Ah, well maybe vim votes should go for emacs(due solely to the fact that they're of the same type of editor?)
I didn't mean to be editor specific in this poll, NOR make a competition, just a curious poll is all.
I seriously can't believe what I'm reading here.
...
MY EYES!
Oh great Moolenaar, have mercy, he does not know what he is saying and pronounces these words without any thought or aim, but simply from habit.
IDE's, they're the only things I've used. In particular, it's Microsoft's Visual C++ 2005 Express, the only one I've used at the moment. I would like to get Visual Studio 2005, but that may be quite a while (it's expensive for one, even the lowest edition, and the cheapest one is near my upper spending limit).
Wow, QuestionC, you don't have to be an ass about it, but if you happened to MISS IT, I DID mention that I haven't ever USED Vim. This implies that I don't really KNOW MUCH about it, and was going off ONLY what I was just told by CrazyNorman.
Congrats on the success of dampering a friendly poll with rudeness.
Lumping emacs and vi together is like saying "Israelis, Palestinians, all the same thing!" Sorry to relieve you of your ignorance, but this is one of the biggest, hottest, most famous flamewar topics in the history of computers.
So to some of us, it was you who came off looking incredibly rude.
Well, I think that you should either have not made it a poll at all, or else listed all as general categories. After all, "emacs" is editor specific.Quote:

IDE... makes life so much easier. I had to use a command line compiler a few years back ( Borland early one ) I hated it. Im so glad they brought IDE's in, Although the first one I had was DevC++ 4.880 which had the most sarcastic compiler messages ever. I remember I wote a 1200 line C program once for a college assignment not long after I started my course. I had one error, and it didn;t even highlight the error, just said
"Syntax error". It took me an extra hour to go through the code line by line, all I miseed was a closing brace to a for loop scope. But partly my fault for not turning matching brace highlightings on.
Then I moved onto Visual C++ 6.0 and thought that was ok apart from a dodgy compiler from time to time. Now I use Visual C++ 2003.net and DevC++ 4.992 only for test programs mainly. But im gald I ditched Borland's command line. I have also had a trial with Borland BuilderX, but they abandoned the project, so that was a waste of time in the end.
I kid, I kid. There is a lot of history behind this topic, and I must confess to having gotten into some pretty impassioned diatribes about 'hjkl' myself. Nowadays, arguments about this are pretty much always tongue-in-cheek.

Honestly, comparing vi and emacs is pointless.
vi is better.
You said it's similar, which is what I said you said it was.
Try getting into bomb fights, then you would have something in common.
I wish people that gave a crap about stuff like Windows vs Linux would get into bomb fights.
Giving a crap about the difference isn't the same as getting worked up about it. At work, my development environment is Linux, and yet the product's main target is Windows (there are many other targets, but Windows is most of the sales base). So I deal with both on a daily basis. I'm not terribly opinionated about it, but I do "give a crap."
Ok, well pardon my ignorance of this long-standing conflict over Vim vs. Emacs. To go along with your metaphor, the Israelis vs Palestinians one? Well, My grouping of Emacs and Vim together is like calling BOTH Israelis and Palestinians people of the Middle East. I believe this is very accurate, and that's how I was treating emacs and vim. I don't know, nor care about the big debate over emacs and vim. Emacs got its own category because of my ignorance of the popularity of vim, and because I prefer emacs, so there's a little bias. This isn't supposed to be some contest, like "IF EMACS GETS THE MOST VOTES IT'S BETTER THAN VIM!" It was just a curious poll, so please, lighten up. Put away the mail bombs, and get out the styrofoam hands, and vote.
EDIT:
I am aware that Emacs isn't a general category, but are you aware that this isn't a regulated, serious poll?? If you're not, I suggest you read my posts in this topic.
Btw, I don't see how I was being rude in any way in regards to grouping Emacs and Vim together. I believe I explained myself above.
So honestly, don't be an .............. about a light-hearted thing, I'll say it once more:
THIS POLL IS NOT A SERIOUS POLL, IT IS FOR CURIOSITY AND FRIENDLY POSTING OF YOUR FAVORITE EDITOR
At least be aware of the major differences between the two. Most importantly, vi is a modal editor, while emacs is modeless. This is an ENORMOUS difference from an interface perspective. I'm not trying to be serious here -- I don't partake in the emacs vs. vi flame wars.
I didn't say you were rude. I said some people might view it as extremely rude. I'm not one of those people. I'm simply pointing out that, among certain people, you might be stoned for such a comment.Quote:

I'm picking up a big rock right now. :D
Dev-C++ (IDE) is my favorite C/C++ editor. But for all other languages, Notepad++ is the best.
Visual Studio on windows, vim on linux.
I use Visual Studio for everything (php, asp, html, etc and of course c++, c#) now. It just looks clean and easy in the eye and don't bother to have to many code editors.
I use notepad and all those light text editors for copy-n-paste stuff.
(g)vim under Lunix, Programmer's Notepad under Windows (vim for Windows has pretty crappy shell integration)
I'm thinking of doing my final year c++ project in eclipse. I can't get used to Visual C++ Express.
Kate forever! And, pray tell, why is it grouped with Notepad?
Sorry, but Kate isn't exactly in league with Notepad, more with an IDE. If you don't believe me, try launching Kate and pressing F7 . . . and then type make. It's basically an IDE, IMO.
Also, I use vim for makefiles (because I don't use tabs to indent, and I have Kate set up to replace all typed tabs with 4 spaces), and Dev-C++ when I use Windows. Also, I'll use Cygwin for ncurses programming under windows, and I'll use SciTE for general Windows text-editing.
And while I'm at it, I use Firefox . . . ;)
