which commands

hi every one am new bie to this programming
am using os windowsxp in my pc.
how can excute system file like notepad ,mediaplayer ... in programatically
can i use system() command. if yes. how can i use this commands .
please show me the ways if all possibles.
i hope you can sure replay my doubts.
